    About the roles

    This year we are delighted to offer a number of graduate opportunities for candidates with a real passion for business, to join our commercial programmes based at various key locations across the UK.  This is an exciting opportunity to really put your learning into practice, and develop practical skills in an environment where you'll be fully supported and encouraged to be your best.

    Due to our size and diversity, we can offer you a structured yet challenging development programme where you'll have the support of a Graduate Programme Manager and a business mentor to assist you in reaching your full potential.  The programme will support your career development into a permanent role with SSE that reflects your experience and passion.

    Here's information on the projects you could be involved in, for each Division.

    Enterprise Distribution Energy (Perth, Glasgow, Reading, London, Home based). 

    We are delivering the next generation of sustainable energy infrastructure to businesses across the UK.  We are a growing business and operate in some really exciting markets from EV to energy storage, from heating and cooling networks to water networks - our business is certainly diverse.

    Transmission (Perth/Glasgow)

    We have a Business Analyst role supporting the wider Business Planning & Commercial team which covers strategy, sustainability and regulatory performance reporting.

    Distribution ((SEPD) Oxford, Reading, Southampton, Portsmouth, Poole, Melksham, Aldershot, Slough or (SHEPD) Glasgow, Perth, Inverness and Aberdeen.)

    Working within our Distribution business you'll be at the forefront of seeing how our network operates. You'll be involved in projects and activities that help us ensure our network is not only running effectively, but is continually utilising innovative and commercially viable new technologies and efficient ways of providing energy to all customers.

    Business Energy  (Perth, Glasgow, Reading, Dublin, Belfast, Cardiff.)

    Working within the SSE Energy directorate, Energy Customer Solutions (ECS) is the Customer facing division of SSE and is comprised of SSE Airtricity in Ireland, and SSE Business Energy in Great Britain.

    • We provide green energy, as well as low-carbon energy solutions to 1.3 million customers, both business and domestic customers, across Great Britain and Ireland jurisdictions.
    • We have a strong market position with great customer relationships and expert customer teams working in Belfast, Cardiff, Dublin, Perth, and Reading. 

    Business Energy (ECS - SMART Programme) (Cardiff, Reading, Perth) 

    Helping our customers to have efficient and sustainable energy solutions is at our core. Throughout your placements you'll work within our Business Energy Smart Metering Programme which is focused on bringing new opportunities for businesses through utilising emerging technologies to support the ever-changing energy landscape. Smart metering innovation is not only giving businesses ways to more accurately record usage, more critically, it is exposing new and exciting energy data management and sustainability possibilities. Smart metering also plays a key part in our overall driving ambition to help customers and the wider industry achieve carbon net-zero outcomes. The programme is entering an exciting new phase as we support a new Government regime to roll out Smart meters across the country, after bouncing back from a challenging period of lockdowns. Every day will be exciting and different, with exposure to a lively, fast paced environment. There will be opportunities for successful candidates to learn, adopt and practice new programme and project management skills as we drive the rollout of Smart meters to our business customers. Being able to work with high profile customers, exciting campaigns and exposure to commercial and business strategy will also be on offer, along with working with complex data and supporting operational and regulatory reporting and contract management. These roles will also provide great exposure across our business as you collaborate and interact with a diverse number of stakeholders, including Smart metering industry experts and net-zero enthusiasts!

    What do I need to join?

    For these programmes, you'll ideally have a minimum of a 2:2 in maths, economics, finance, quantity surveying, STEM subject, marketing, business, business management, electrical engineering, engineering, project management, legal, strategy, data analytics, data science, energy efficiency.

    You'll be passionate about business and commercial aspects and will be looking to put this into practice in a business environment, where we are focussing on developing technologies and infrastructure that supports the business in meeting the UK net-zero ambitions.

    We’d love you to have practical work or project experience that reflects your passion, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team.  You’ll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges.

    You should have an interest in and how we can improve the energy sector, and show alignment with SSE's core values. We also ask that you have a flexible approach to work locations and be genuinely committed to developing a career with us – as we are with you.
