If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to help accelerate and de-risk this transformation; working on cutting-edge projects in the GB and international power industry.

    Working as part of our multi-disciplined teams, we have opportunities for graduates to join our Power System Engineers at The National HVDC Centre. The HVDC Centre is owned and operated by SSEN Transmission but works with all the GB transmission companies.

    Opened in April 2017, the Centre is the national hub for HVDC modelling and simulation, knowledge exchange, and research. We use state-of-the-art high-performance computing facilities to model and resolve complex issues before they impact on the delivery or operation of HVDC projects. Our globally recognised work helps to ensure the integrity and security of GB energy supplies as we transition to a net zero network.

There will also be networking and presentation opportunities, specialist sessions and support from our current graduates, including those working at the Centre today.  You will be supported in your role with a placement plan, regular meetings with your line manager and networking with key business leaders through quarterly placement reviews.

    Responsibilities

    • Explore HVDC Technologies: Dive into the fascinating world of HVDC. You'll conduct simulations to investigate performance, including real schemes connecting to the GB network. Utilise our state-of-the-art real-time simulation facilities and vendor-supplied hardware and models.
    • Lead and Communicate: Lead the delivery of projects for our stakeholders. Identify key insights that hold value and importance, and effectively communicate your findings through publications, technical reports, and engaging presentations.
    • Collaborative Innovation: Work closely with colleagues within the Centre and our valued partners. Together, we develop knowledge and capabilities in HVDC and related simulation tools by participating in world-leading research while helping to support the development, delivery, and operation of real-life HVDC projects.

    What do I need?

    You’ll have a minimum of a 2:1 in Electrical Engineering or a numerate degree with aptitude for simulation/coding, before or by September 2024.

    We'd love you to have some practical work experience that reflects your passion for the energy sector, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges and should have a genuine interest in SSEN Transmission and the prospect of a long term future with us.
