What is the role?
The role will focus on bringing legacy systems into the 21st Century by designing smart energy systems that deliver multiple benefits for clients including carbon reduction, construction cost optimisation, revenue generation or operating cost reduction. The role is a trainee Project Development Manager or Project Development Engineer working on projects that will incorporate digital technology and distributed energy systems (solar PV, energy storage systems, fuel cells, heat pumps, anaerobic digestion, electric vehicle chargers or hydrogen microturbines).
The Project Development graduate programme is designed to give you practical experience of all aspects of the project development role in SSE’s Energy Solutions business; The project development engineer will have a greater focuses on the fundamental design and development of distributed energy systems. Our projects support large buildings, campuses or developments across the UK. You’ll combine an meticulous attention to detail and a passion for innovation
You will develop experience and competencies across a broad range of activities including:
- Working on net-zero energy strategies
- Design of Distributed Energy Systems
- Modelling energy flows
- Developing New Business Models leveraging digitisation
- Techno-economic modelling
- Understanding the influence of policy
- Project and bid management
- Client relationship management
- Contract negotiation
You will gain this experience through a series of “hands-on” placements working with our specialist teams and supporting real projects. At the end of the programme, you will have the skills and experience to take on a project development manager role. This is an exciting and absorbing role leading a project team which spans all aspects of the project, including client relationship, contract negotiation, internal & external stakeholder management, engineering, planning and construction works and while you won’t be expected to be an expert in these fields, you will draw on the expertise in the teams and understand how these contribute to a successful distributed energy systems project for our clients and SSE.
Because our business spans a wide range of decentralised low carbon activities, including electricity networks, electric vehicles, solar, energy storage and smart buildings you will also gain invaluable knowledge and awareness of these broader technologies and how they support integrated local smart energy systems. The skill set you develop on the programme will be transferable across all these sectors as your career progresses.
We can offer you a structured yet challenging development programme where you'll have the support of the Graduate Programme Manager and a business mentor to assist you in reaching your full potential. As an engineer you will be supported with your chartership goals and will be provided with Chartered mentor. The programme will support your career development into a permanent role within SSE.

What do I need?
For this role we are seeking proactive graduates with a passion for decarbonising energy, an appetite to learn and excellent attention to detail, who want to join our team delivering low carbon projects across the UK.
You’ll ideally be on track to achieve a minimum of a 2:2 in an Environmental Science, Geography, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, building services, renewables energy systems or related STEM discipline.
A strong understanding of MS Excel and MS PowerPoint and excellent attention to detail. We'd love you to have practical work or project experience that reflects your passion for the role, as well as demonstrable experience of working in a team. You'll also be comfortable working to and setting stretching individual targets and using your own initiative to overcome challenges.
We also ask that you have a flexible approach to work locations and be genuinely committed to developing a career with us – as we are with you.
All roles are likely to involve some travel to other sites to gain practical exposure to a wide range of business areas, therefore a full UK driving licence would be an advantage but is not essential.
