STV’s Central Technical Area consists of a small dynamic team of operators and engineers providing 24/7 television playout services across Central and Northern Scotland using a variety of broadcasting platforms. An opportunity has arisen for a Broadcast Engineering Trainee to join STV in the Network Operations Centre on an 18 month fixed term contract basis.
Key responsibilities
Reporting into the Broadcast Systems & Engineering Manager, the Graduate Trainee will work across and gain a good understanding of all areas of STV Broadcast Engineering.
You will be based in the Network Operations Centre (NOC) and be responsible for:
- Monitoring of STV output across Central and Northern Scotland on a range of platforms
- Providing first line support across the Playout and Broadcast infrastructure
- Services to our News operation including communications and satellite downlinks
- Engagement in project work and system installations and configuration
Operational, on the job training will be provided in all areas of the CTA including NOC, Playout and Content Management, in conjunction with training and education in all aspects of STV’s Broadcast Technology Infrastructure.
Skills & experience
- A technology-related degree profile
- A keen interest in all aspects of Television technology
- The ability to work at a systems engineering level from drawings and documentation
- Excellent IT skills including networking – an interest in coding would be beneficial
- The ability to work well in teams
- Fault-finding skills and the capacity to solve technical problems in a creative way
- Strong communication and people skills
- The ability to remain calm under pressure
- A proactive and results-focused approach to work
- The ability to work with a minimum of supervision
- Knowledge of health and safety in the workplace
- Sufficient colour vision and hearing

The STV Broadcast Technology department provides a 24/7 operational role. The Graduate Trainee will initially work regular (9am to 5.30pm) hours progressing to a shift pattern across 7 days.
