Materials Development Engineer
TE’s Energy Division are seeking a Materials Development Engineer to join their team in Swindon. This division offers products for joining, terminating, insulating, and protecting power systems for the electrical power industry. It supplies over 90% of the world’s largest energy utilities with connectivity products that are reliable, trusted and stand the test of time, even in the harshest environments and the world’s most remote locations.
Job Overview
We are seeking an innovative, enthusiastic, and practical Materials Development Engineer to be a key part of our Engineering team, and to drive the materials aspects of sustaining engineering activities and new product development trials. Working closely with Energy Division Operations, Development and Product Management you will assist in supporting current business, initiating, and implementing product and process improvements.
Job Responsibilities
You will be responsible for data analysis to identify and implement new raw material suppliers and grades to manage numerous sustaining and obsolescence activities. Supporting issues associated with compound manufacture and conversion. Management and control of quality issues related to compounds, and the corrective action / disposition of NCR material.
Taking accountability for managing & implementing cost improvement projects for Energy materials / processes. Successful technical project management under tight time-constraints is a significant part of the role. You will deal with external raw material and compound suppliers. Representing Energy at supplier meetings and the regular Supplier Management Team (SMT) meeting.
As a Materials Development Engineer you will manage development trials and non-standard product requests through the Materials Division & Energy Division plants. Providing manufacturing data to aid in problem solving, scrap reduction, product costing & rationalisation decisions.
Qualifications
You may be working towards Membership of a professional engineering Institution. Due to the nature of this position, you will have specialist education in a related subject (i.e. degree, HNC/D or diploma in relevant Engineering discipline, preferable Material Science and processing).
Key Requirements
• Hold previous experience of a Manufacturing and/or R&D background with an understanding of the fundamentals of polymeric materials, processing, analytical techniques and characterisation.
• Sound knowledge & experience of process engineering and development, preferably in a wide variety of polymer processing, engineering and materials.
• Experience in problem solving and statistical techniques and their application.
• Ideally hold Six sigma preferred.
• Ability to work unsupervised, manage projects and deliver concise, timely results.
• Must be able to manage numerous projects and objectives simultaneously.
• Strong awareness of Health, Safety and Environmental issues in the workplace.
• Good IT skills and ability to train in and use a variety of systems.
• Experience of TEOA practices, and in particular LEANPD, would be advantageous
• Demonstrate successful results in the implementation of improvements, project management & problem solving.
