We’re looking for a developer with a passion for data analysis and visualisation, who also wants to contribute to a network of communicators tackling climate change.
You’ll be joining our Measurement, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) team, working with a lead developer and a senior data engineer, and in close collaboration with other data-focused, cross-functional staff.
The MEL team works primarily with media data, trying to measure how public discourse is evolving on key topics related to climate change. This includes experimenting with cutting-edge approaches to natural language processing, as we currently work mainly with news article and transcript text data.
This role is a hybrid of technical and analytical work. It will involve writing and maintaining web app code for dashboard interfaces and data visualisations, but also scoping and interpreting the data within the tools, including translating client team needs into technical specifications and helping them understand the data coming out of those tools.
In terms of technical qualifications, our priority is finding someone who is curious and able to learn new things. This role will help deliver and embed the next generation of impact tracking dashboards and media analysis tools within the organisation.
If this sounds like you, we'd love for you to apply.
How you'll contribute
- Collaborate with teams around the world to understand their needs and provide them with media analysis that answers their questions and helps them make decisions.
- Working on the MEL technical team, translate those team needs and solutions into a clear product vision and prioritise features for development.
- Build and maintain web applications with front-end data visualisation interfaces, primarily using Python and Streamlit.
- Scope dataset requirements, present drafts and demos, and gather feedback.
- Translate high-level needs into clear technical specifications.
- Prototype exploratory data analyses and NLP workflows.
- Deploy on and learn to use back-end and cloud services.
- Ability to understand client needs and find necessary answers in the data.
- Bring professional development and documentation processes and quality.
- Any other duties to be assigned from time to time
Our ideal candidate has
- Demonstrated knowledge of Python, Pandas, and SQL.
- Experience building web apps, dashboards or interactive charts using frameworks (e.g., Streamlit, Dash, etc.).
- Experience with data analysis or data science, which can include media analysis, survey analysis, text analysis or another form of quantitative or statistical analysis.
- Experience with cloud computing platforms, specifically GCP, is a plus.
- Knowledge of JavaScript is a plus.
- Experience with social listening and media monitoring platforms is a plus (e.g. Event Registry News API, Meltwater, Talkwalker, Brandwatch, etc.).
- Fluency in written and spoken English, our working language; additional languages are an asset.
- A genuine interest in and passion for addressing climate change.
- The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.
- The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack and email (Google Workspace).
- A commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change.
Why join us?
- Be part of a remote-first, international network of professionals working on climate, energy and nature. We offer coworking access in some locations.
- Work with a bunch of dynamic, culturally diverse individuals who combine their passion to make a difference with a rigorous and results-oriented approach to work.
- Enjoy regular opportunities to connect and collaborate with colleagues around the world.
- A full-time position with a consultant or employment contract (subject to location) for 12 months, with a possible renewal after one year.
We may be able to provide co-working spaces in some locations. Only candidates with the right to work in their location will be considered.
