    This position will be wet-lab-based and will work closely together with postdoctoral research associate and research assistant team to maintain long-term microbial evolution experiments.

    The role

    They will provide technical support with minimal supervision, in a range of project specific research activities including: the running and trouble shooting of experiments; the maintenance, use and teaching of research associated equipment.

    To assist team members in ensuring that staff and students operate safe working practices ensuring health and safety compliance within the laboratories.

    About you

    • A qualification at QCF level 6 (such as a bachelor’s degree) in a relevant biological science subject OR
    • QCF level 2 passes (such as GCSE’s) in English and Mathematics and at least one Science subject and substantial relevant experience of working in a research laboratory
    • Knowledge and practical experience of lab bacteriology and molecular biology techniques (bacterial culturing and quantification; sterile technique; PCR and electrophoresis; genetic modification and cloning; DNA extraction)
    • Knowledge and practical experience of mobile genetic element (e.g. phage, plasmid) or defence system microbiology techniques (e.g. phage isolation; culturing and quantification; plaque and EOP assays; conjugation and transformation assays)
    • Knowledge and experience of experimental evolution techniques (e.g., transfer experiments; competitive fitness assays; mutation rate assays)
    • Knowledge and experience of basic bioinformatics (e.g., primer design; blast; vector design)
    • Knowledge of and compliance with relevant Health and Safety regulation, the Data Protection Act Standard Operating Procedures and risk assessments including COSHH risk assessments
    • Experience in the provision of information and guidance to managers, staff and students
    • Excellent communication skills (written and oral), demonstrating an ability to deal with a wide range of people, effectively and politely with staff, students and visitors
