Trainees are a top priority for our firm. Candidates should have an excellent fit with our vision and values, with a commitment to social justice, and a passion for working only for clients who have been injured or mistreated.

    About the role

You will undertake a 2-year period of recognised training (training contract), developing all the skills and experience you will need, including drafting, legal research, interviewing clients, negotiating and preparing for trials. You will be based in our Manchester office.

The period of training will focus on our Trade Union Law work, but you will gain exposure to other areas of law meeting the requirements of the Solicitors Regulation Authority. You will be involved in cutting-edge trade union litigation.

We offer a comprehensive programme, where each day is different and brings new and stimulating challenges, with ample opportunity to learn. To ensure you thrive in the role, we will provide you with regular supervision, feedback and support, enabling you to shape and grow your career. The successful candidate will be self-sufficient and thrive in a busy working environment.

We are a leading social justice law firm working closely with trade unions. We have won numerous ground-breaking cases for individuals and trade unions over the last 100 years, in UK and international courts. The successful candidate will be based in our Trade Union Law Group, which is the ‘go to’ trade union law team for most major trade unions at national level.

We currently represent 11 major trade unions in a judicial review of the regulations allowing agency workers to cover during strikes. In the last year, we have won major trade union rights cases in the European Court of Human Rights and the Supreme Court. You will be an important member of the team on these high-profile cases. We also represented the Fire Brigades Union at the Grenfell Tower inquiry. We work with a number of unions in preparation for the COVID inquiry. We pride ourselves on being “the most experienced trade union, claimant and employment rights law firm in the UK”, our friendly working environment and our excellent work/life balance.

We are looking for a candidate with excellent written and communication skills. They will have a keen eye for detail along with the ability to work quickly and accurately.

The candidate must have prior completion of the Legal Practice Course, be committed to meeting deadlines and have excellent organisation and prioritisation skills.
