We perform research, mathematical modeling, software development and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants and automotive and airborne vehicles. Military, government, corporate and academic clients’ value the validation of Applied Science’s software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.

    The Role

    We have an opportunity for a Graduate Engineer to join our Applied Science Practice, based in our Belfast office, where we use our expert knowledge to develop technical and bespoke solutions for our clients. Our Belfast office currently comprises of three Chartered Mechanical Engineers who support the wider business in the UK, US and Australia. Due to increased workload and a desire to grow the business, we have identified the opportunity for a graduate to support the team and develop their career in engineering consultancy.

    The role is dependent upon the experience and skillset of the selected applicant but will require supporting projects across a wide range of disciplines, with a focus on structural dynamics but also supporting technical safety and thermo-fluids as well as forensic style investigations. The candidate with have the opportunity to support Thornton Tomasetti’s wider Decarbonisation initiative through clean-energy technology projects in wind, hydrogen, battery storage and nuclear power. The type of work is varied, providing an opportunity to develop new skills while working on interesting and technically challenging projects.

    Examples of recent and ongoing projects carried out in Belfast include:

    • Analysis & fire testing of nuclear container insulation system
    • Fire load response analysis of process vessels
    • Impact analyses of reinforced concrete structures
    • Fire & blast assessments and inspections on offshore installations
    • Crashworthiness analysis of hazardous materials rail tank cars
    • Forensic investigation of mobile cranes subject to shock loading
    • Evaluating and mitigating risks associated with battery energy storage facilities and wind turbine developments.

    Responsibilities

    The candidate will be required to learn new software and undertake numerical simulations, primarily in the area of nonlinear structural analyses. They will be required to communicate their findings and recommendations to colleagues and clients and should therefore possess strong interpersonal, oral and written skills. The candidate should also be able to demonstrate an ability and desire to solve complex engineering / scientific problems. They will be supported by industry experts from across the business as they develop these skills. Occasional site visits, travel to client offices and other TT offices will be required.

    Qualifications

    • Master’s in Engineering preferred (or a related subject) and must be able to demonstrate excellent understanding of fundamental principles and problem solving.
    • Strong IT skills are required with an enthusiasm to learn new applications and packages.
    • Knowledge of programming languages is desirable.
