TfL keeps London working, moving and growing - but we can only do this through our talented people.  We’re a high-profile organisation with countless opportunities to offer that will enhance your skills and develop your career. Our work is big-budget with a capital investment of around £2billion each year, so we look for the best people who are passionate about the continued success of London.

Our General Managers focus on leading people and projects in order to keep London moving. During the scheme you will gain experience across a wide range of business areas in London Underground and Surface Transport. No two experiences in this role will be the same and you will gain a wide variety of knowledge and skills. You could be working on the front line, leading a team of staff in a Zone 1 underground station, or managing a project and guiding multi-million pound investment decisions.

The Role

As a graduate, your two year development programme will be made of up to six placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every graduate’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Placement 1 – Customer Service Manager at Kings Cross  – six months – lead and manage a team of up to 50 staff, respond quickly to operational incidents, provide excellent service to thousands of customers
Placement 2 – Office of the Managing Director of Surface Transport – four months – write high-profile briefings for the Mayor’s Office and the managing director, represent TfL at senior stakeholder meetings

Placement 3 – Elizabeth Line  – six months – write operational readiness plans for the launch, develop a training programme for staff working on the new stations, implement a comms and engagement plan

There is a lot of flexibility for graduates to choose their own placements and tailor their scheme to their own development ambitions.

Requirements

Everything we do as an organisation is to ensure that our evolving city remains future-proof for millions of Londoners. Our talented graduates form a vital part of that vision, so it’s important that we find the best people to help us do this. We’re looking for people who:

  • Lead the way
  • Have a minimum of 2:2 in any subject
  • Relish a challenge
  • Be a keen problem solver
  • Have an inquisitive mind

As a member of the team, we’ll give you responsibility and the opportunity to add value from day one.  If you are excited by inspiring and influencing the future of London and are up for a challenge and thrive under pressure, then this is the career path for you.

What you can expect from us

Whilst on the scheme, we'll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We'll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities with scheme alumni. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme Sponsor and your Line Manager. You'll also be connected to a 'buddy' who will be an alumnus from the scheme.

We also have an established Graduate and Apprentice Committee and Alumni group, who organise informative events to enhance your understanding of the organisation and provide opportunities to develop your career. They also provide valuable support for the wellbeing of current graduates.
