Training Contract 2023
We are now accepting training contract applications. Please complete an application form and choose the option "Training Contract" option. We have vacancies in March and September 2023.
Please note we do not review applications on a rolling basis. Therefore, if successful you will be invited to an assessment centre in August 2020.
We recruit 23 trainees every year, split between March and September intakes and based at our offices in London, Birmingham, Exeter and Manchester. Training is divided into four six-month seats and you can expect to experience a broad range of departments and practice areas over the course of the two-year period.
All trainees are teamed with a supervisor. It's their role to guide you through each of your six-month seats and ensure that you are given plenty of challenges and all the support you need.
From the outset, you will be given real responsibility and the opportunity to learn from hands-on experience in a supportive working environment.
Seat moves
We will allocate your first seat at Trowers, but for the remaining three seats we will do our best to fit in with the areas you want to learn more about.
Our core areas of expertise are real estate, corporate, dispute resolution & litigation and banking & finance. We also have strong expertise in commercial property, employment, housing and regeneration, private wealth, projects and construction and public sector commercial.
We offer all trainees the option to either undertake a contentious seat or attend an external litigation programme. Designed to fulfil the contentious element of your authorised period of training and fully approved by the SRA, the external programme is made up of classroom tutorials along with practical experience at an advice centre.
Training
We offer a rounded, structured training programme designed to help you hit the ground running on qualification.
Over the course of your training contract, you will undertake a number of SRA-stipulated professional skills courses. In addition to the compulsory elements (financial & business skills, advocacy & communication skills, and client care & professional standards), you will undertake elective courses on skills that are relevant for your own individual development.
Our professional support lawyers also deliver a number of in-house training sessions throughout the year to our trainees on a range of commercial and legal topics.
Induction programme
The first few weeks at the firm are dedicated to presentations and training sessions introducing you to the firm's practical operation and are geared to fully preparing you for the start of your training contract.
As well as training, our induction programme is about trainees getting to know their new colleagues. We ensure that there are plenty of informal opportunities for you to meet with Trowers' people. For those to be based in London, there is also an afternoon dedicated to introducing you to your new department, with the existing trainee giving you an extensive handover before they move on to their next seat.
Appraisal process
We believe that continuous assessment and feedback is key to the successful development of everyone, and this is particularly true for our trainees. During each seat, you will have a mid-seat and end-of-seat appraisal with your supervisor to assess your performance so far. Reviewed to ensure that they are constructive, these appraisals are designed to ensure your training needs are always identified and met.
Trainee Solicitors' Committee
Sometimes problems do happen and we believe it is vital our trainees have a strong network of support that they can turn to in times of need. As well as (our Training Principal), Lucy James and your own dedicated supervisor, Jacqui Bernuzzi (our Graduate Recruitment & Development Manager) is always on hand to offer advice.
The Trainee Solicitors' Committee is headed up by Lucy and includes a cross-section of Partners as well as the Graduate Recruitment & Development team. The committee meets regularly to discuss trainee-related issues and initiatives, and focuses us on ensuring that we continue to offer the best training possible.
One trainee represents each intake on the committee. The trainee representatives are encouraged to raise any issues that you would like to have discussed at the meeting and to provide our feedback on those matters.
Qualification
As a trainee, you will have the opportunity to apply for any newly-qualified vacancies available across the firm during your qualification process. The process is comprehensive, open and transparent - we inform our qualifying trainees of how many positions there are in each department / office, and run a formal application and interview process for those vacancies.
Training never stops at Trowers and we operate a structured newly-qualified programme to help make the transition as smooth as possible.
