RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) designs, procures, commissions, operates and maintains the wide range equipment used for maintenance and enhancements of the JET Tokamak and is active in the design and development of remote maintenance systems used in ITER and DEMO fusion reactors. It is also working on a range of international projects relating to decommissioning and other hazardous environments.
As a Graduate Remote Handling Operations Engineer you will be expected to be continuously working towards building their knowledge and skills and be able manage own development with help and support from line management and assigned mentors.
This is an excellent early career opportunity for recent graduates or for mechanical biased technicians who wish to further their career in a highly technical role involving complex remote handling equipment. Full and comprehensive training is provided to help you develop.
You will work under the supervision and guidance of Operations Engineers to develop remote handling tasks, conduct tooling/component design reviews and operate the remote handling system. This role is critical to ensuring the efficient completion of remote operations, from the design stage through to implementation.
The Remote Handling Operations Group is responsible for operating and maintaining the remote handling equipment, comprising electromechanical devices varying in size from small tools up to a 400kg capacity robotic arm with a reach of 10 metres.

What will you be responsible for?
- Develop operational methods for remote handling tasks, presenting these to Operations Engineers.
- Ensure productive use of development resources, complete the specification of requirements for physical and virtual mock-ups of remote handling equipment.
- Specify and issue sequence descriptions and remote handling operating procedures using the RH Operation Documentation System and related Human Machine Interfaces.
- Assist in the shift management of remote handling and manual operations inside the JET torus.
- Work on assigned projects an Operations Group representative as part of a multi-disciplinary team, following the project plan provided.
Special Requirements
Please note that you may be required to work in Beryllium and Radiation controlled areas. All necessary training and registration for this will be provided by United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. The JET shutdown operations are staffed in shifts and the appointee must be prepared to work shifts or be on call as required.
However, this is only during shutdown preparation and operation. (Not full-time shift work. On average about 25% of the year). Typical shift pattern when in remote operations are 06:00–15:30 for 2 weeks, one week on base hours (37.5 hours) and 15:15-01:15 for 2 weeks.

- Recognised Engineering degree.
- Good understanding of hands-on mechanical engineering and kinematics.
- Ability to work accurately with a high attention to detail.
- Communicate technical/mechanical ideas and problem solve.
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
