Avantor Services provides a broad variety of on-site Laboratory and Materials Management Services for major pharmaceutical customers and works collaboratively with the client to provide resource to deliver core scientific activities. The Anne McLaren Building (AMB) requires an individual to support the laboratory research programme as a Laboratory Technician
This role is multi-disciplinary, and the successful candidate will support the day-to-day operations of a defined set of laboratories. The Laboratory Technician role directly and indirectly supports scientists across R&D functions within AstraZeneca & Cancer Research UK, allowing scientists to concentrate on their core role. This role is to be primarily lab-based, focusing on the delivery of scientific technical support to the R&D laboratories in accordance with Health and Safety and Good Laboratory Standards requirements.
Driving FM service delivery
- Ensure activities are performed with quality and to defined schedules within a specified area. Act and report on deviations
- Contribute to the laboratory operational efficiency by liaising with FM suppliers and stakeholders. This includes AstraZeneca and Cambridge University staff
- Assists with booking in, hosting and visits from internal/external partners, including for inspections/audits (main point of contact for hosting internal contractors)
- Act as a contact for key customers
- Optimises use of shared space and maintains BAU throughout the changing footprint
- Proactively identify and support operational efficiencies by implementing process improvements resulting in time and cost-savings for the customer
- Creation, maintenance and updating relevant documentation in support of service delivery, compliance and training
- Report on KPIs, metrics, SLAs and weekly tasks
Lab support
- Proactively deliver the operational laboratory support managing workload and service levels as required by the research group(s)
- Preventative maintenance, cleaning & documentation of several laboratory instruments including incubators, tissue culture hoods & water baths
- Perform specialist equipment user performance checks (e.g. balances, pH meters)
- Management of Tube Labelling Services
- Management of consumables & reagents, including Point of Use (PoU) Kanban areas by daily monitoring and replenishment, liaising with in-house media prep. services, VHP preparation
- Maintain and organise laboratory consumable & reagent inventories
- Monitor and keep communal areas clean and tidy
- Receipt and unpacking of some temperature sensitive parcel deliveries
- Management & shipment of pipettes for calibration and servicing off-site
- Waste management
- Assist in study preparation
Health and safety compliance
- Adhere to SHE regulations, PPE policies and follow Avantor Work Instructions & Risk Assessments
- Assist Laboratory Manager to maintain a safe laboratory environment and report any incidents/near misses
- Work proactively with line manager to ensure all training activities are completed and signed off in a timely manner
Skills, knowledge and competencies
- Proven excellent customer service focus and ability to work collaboratively
- Clear and concise written and spoken communication skills
- Problem-solving capabilities & confidence to react promptly to deliver the best service possible
- Good planning, organisational and analytical skills
- Good time management skills, ability to be flexible and handle multiple responsibilities/tasks
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Basic IT skills required (advance Microsoft Excel preferable)
- Experience of working in a laboratory environment
- Experience in a customer-facing role is an advantage
- A scientific qualification is preferable, or experience working within a scientific environment
- Knowledge of SHE requirements in a laboratory environment
- Knowledge of GLP regulations
- Demonstrates loyalty & commitment to the organisation and team members
- Flexible with working hours when required to deliver the service to our customers
- Flexible to cover at different sites when required
- Self-motivated, energetic and dependable with a clear attention to detail
