    Our project managers are instrumental in delivery our multi-Billion pound capital investment programme to bring improved levels of service to our customers and the environment.

    Job accountabilities

    • Initially you will be responsible for supporting an existing project manager or project engineer in managing and delivering projects safely and on time, to cost and quality constraints. In this period you will become accustomed to managing other specialists to deliver project objectives. We believe working in an inter-disciplinary team is a key requirement in order to deliver innovative, reliable and cost effective solutions that are sustainable.
    • To further embed your understanding of our objectives during the training scheme you will get to experience project delivery from other key roles including site construction management, risk management, contract and commercial management and project controls.
    • Within the first two years of your three year programme, we want you to have developed your project management skills in either of our water, wastewater, better rivers or studies programme and gain an understanding of the technologies used, together with our company standards and procedures.
    • During your programme, you will be expected to become familiar with the operations structure of United Utilities and how it interacts with the various programmes of work.
    • No two days are ever the same. It's a mix of office based and site work, and we cover everywhere from Crewe to Carlisle.
    • The final 12-months of the scheme will see you take on more responsibility, enabling you to take on projects of your own or play a greater role on more complex schemes. In this period you will be expected to show your ability to work with more limited supervision as you demonstrate your increasing project management competence.
    • As well as liaising with and managing other project team members you may also get an opportunity to work with external stakeholders.
    • As a trainee project professional you will need to have a flexible style to suit different situations and already be a proficient communicator and show an aptitude for prioritising tasks and making decisions.

    Training and development

    • United Utilities are a Corporate Partner with The Association for Project Management (APM)
    • The three year graduate programme aims to have our graduates ready to work towards becoming chartered (ChPP) when they come off the scheme.

    Knowledge and skills

    • 2:1 Project Management Degree or 2:1 Science or Engineering Degree with a qualification or experience in Project Management
    • Great interpersonal, communication and influencing skills
    • Contract management/ commercial awareness
    • Technical awareness/ competence
    • Good team working skills, possessing ambition and drive

    Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an assessment centre which are taking place between 6th-15th December 2023.
