We are looking for a Junior Engineer to join the UIS to work within the West Cambridge Data Centre Operations team.
The UIS provides Hosting services for the wider colligate university, supporting the University's core business systems and institutional teaching and research, and the Operations team provides technical advice and support for users.
The role
As a Junior Engineer, you will be part of a small team based at the data centre but will occasionally also have to visit other hosting facilities to carry out duties. The Operations team are responsible for the installation & acceptance testing of equipment and maintenance of active hosting infrastructure across the UIS hosting estate, and the delivery of university hosting support services.
Additionally, maintaining accurate infrastructure records and allocating the necessary resources to complete projects. It is expected that the role holder will work closely with other groups, such as Critical Services, Network Installations and Network Systems to help deliver services. With a wide variety of users, including academics and professional staff, you will be exposed to a wide range of technologies.
You should enjoy interacting with customers and have a desire to progress your technical skills through your work and through the training and development opportunities available.
About you
Ideally, you will have demonstrable skills and experience with:
- Assist with server moves, adds & changes
- Provide remote support and diagnostics for customers.
- Manage and update the running of internal Data centre systems, such as BMS, ENMS, CCTV and access management.
- Report on metrics used within the data centre.
- Monitor & forecast data centre capacity and performance.
- Manage & maintain documentation and asset management.
- Configure and maintain data centre IT infrastructure equipment.
- Manage access requests and escort visitors when required.
Experience with server hardware installation, internal copper and fibre cabling implementation be an advantage. Lifting will be required on occasion so the applicant should be physically able. Some experience with windows and Linux server administrator as well as VMware vCenter would be preferred.
