Are you interested in the circular economy and keen to make a difference with your work?
The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering has an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate to apply their built environment knowledge and skills to understand the materials stocked within the UK’s buildings.
Who we're looking for
We’re looking for someone who has, or is about to complete, an undergraduate degree in a built environment related subject, including Civil/Structural Engineering, Architecture or Architectural Engineering. You’ll work with the wider project team to develop a simple assessment method to quantify the adaptability of existing buildings and their reuse and recycling potential.
You will then be responsible for applying this in analysing drawings and models of buildings to estimate the quantity of materials stocked within them and their potential for secondary reuse. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of buildings, and be comfortable analysing plans, sections, and elevations. You will also have experience of embodied carbon calculations and a good working knowledge of Excel.
The project
This role is part of an EPSRC Funded Project that to understand the circular economic potential of the non-residential building stock. We aim to understand the adaptability, reuse, and recycling potential of the UK’s non-residential buildings using material stock analysis techniques. The project has strong industry partners who we are working with to gather building data and ensure the findings have the maximum impact in practice.
The successful candidate will work alongside the lead investigator, and a post-doctoral research associate, and be supported to build their own expertise in the circular economy, whilst gaining valuable research experience. This role will serve as an excellent springboard to a career in either research or industry.
We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University. If you are interested in the role but wish to work part time, please contact us to discuss further.
