    A Graduate Software Engineer is required to work on the development and implementation of a new mobile application creating a novel supporting learning environment for learners with additional needs.

    This will be part of a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP), which is a collaborative project between First Step Trust Ltd (FST) and the University of Southampton, awarded by Innovate UK. Support and expertise will be provided from both the University of Southampton’s Electronics & Computer Science Department (ECS) and Southampton Education School.

    The role

    The Graduate Software Engineer will be based at FST premises in Woolwich, London and will have ownership of this unique project of developing and integrating novel learning support into an accessible mobile application. This role is suitable for someone with an interest or passion for delivering societal impact.

    This is a great opportunity for a Graduate Software Engineer who is keen to expand their wider commercial and project management experience as an additional training and development budget of £2,000 pa is also provided.

    First Step Trust (FST) is a charity with around 30 years’ experience in providing on-the-job training and salaried employment opportunities for people excluded from working life because of mental health conditions, learning disabilities, drug/alcohol and other disadvantages.

    The Graduate Software Engineer will be required to undertake the following:

    • Develop and carry out research on assistive technologies for training and education.
    • Customer engagement and management activities.
    • Internal engagement activities and demonstrations.
    • Responsibility for the project progress documentation and presenting this to key stakeholders at quarterly meetings.
    • Represent the company and the project at relevant trade shows and exhibitions.

    About you

    • Master's or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence (AI) related fields. BSc Graduates with relevant technical or industry experience will also be considered.
    • Programming skills in Python, Java and Kotlin.
    • An understanding of effective project management skills and techniques.
    • An understanding of Agile & Waterfall methodologies.
    • Confident communication skills.
    • Willingness to be part of a multidisciplinary team.
    • A desire to understand a wider commercial landscape.

    What we offer

    This project will also offer contact with leaders and influencers in the worlds of the automotive industry, NHS mental health services and Criminal Justice secure estate. It is intended that the Graduate Software Engineer continues into an important permanent position with FST upon completion of the KTP.

    Within UoS, you will be working closely with colleagues in the Agents, Interaction and Complexity research group within ECS and in the Centre for Research in Inclusion within the School of Education.
