Graduate Programme

During this programme, you’ll gain valuable insight into our services and strategic projects and we’ll help you to further develop your skills and knowledge so that you can succeed in your career. You’ll also join our graduate network and receive our continued support throughout.

The graduate role will involve spending time within the maintenance and operational teams within the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF). This is a great opportunity to gain experience within the energy from waste industry with the role of exposing the successful candidate to the engineering and operational challenges of a fully 24-hour, 365-day operational ERF.

The role will involve the right candidate spending time on a shift pattern with the operational team and on other ERF plants within the Veolia portfolio. We’re strong believers in continuous development here at Veolia and actively encourage and support everyone to keep going after you finish the programme.

What you'll be doing

  • Gaining experience in the organisation and implementation of day to day maintenance activities. Including the management and documentation of all maintenance activities, such as calibration, installation, fault diagnosis, and repair of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems, ensuring downtime is kept to a minimum while staying within the maintenance budget.
  • Involvement in engineering maintenance projects, including the development of engineering solutions for plant issues and exposure to the project management aspects including cost quality and programme controls.
  • Supporting the operational aspects of the facility including for example. the organisation of consumables procurement, identifying waste inputs, ensuring compliance with all aspects of environmental legislation, helping with the deployment of resources, work scheduling and supporting the plant operation from a central control room.
  • Supporting the commercial teams with operational reports with exposure to contractual issues and the management of customer expectations.
  • Supporting shift teams in the plant operation and learning site safety rules.
  • Involvement in Health, Safety and Environmental routines and supporting HSE themed project work based around environmental and safety legislation.
  • The role could also include secondments to other ERF's in Veolia's Northern Business area such as Tyseley, Battlefield, Sheffield, Chilton and Leeds for project work related to business improvements.

What we're looking for

  • Degree level qualification in a relevant engineering discipline such as Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (to be achieved by September 2025).
  • Practical outlook to problem solving
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Willingness to learn new things and develop
  • An enthusiastic, creative and solution-oriented thinker
  • Drivers Licence (willingness to get one)
  • Willingness to travel if they will be required to travel
