The Role & What You Will Be Doing 

The Undergraduate Industrial Analytical Scientist role will work within the Global Respiratory Group at Viatris helping Viatris to achieve its mission of empowering people worldwide to live healthier at every stage of life through the development of respiratory medicines (e.g., DPIs, MDIs, Nebulised products).

The Undergraduate Industrial Placement at Viatris, Sandwich, offers the opportunity to gain 12 months of invaluable experience in a working laboratory at one of the top 20 global pharmaceutical companies.

By undertaking the Industrial Placement, you will apply and develop the skills your degree has already provided you with as well as learn new skills that are essential for building a career within the pharmaceutical industry – effective communication, collaborative working, and problem solving. You will be mentored by an experienced industrial supervisor through a tailored programme of training, designed to help you grow both professionally and technically as an Analytical Scientist.

Every day, we rise to the challenge to make a difference and the Undergraduate Industrial Placement Analytical Scientist role will make an impact through the following responsibilities:

  • Carry out analytical activities required to deliver new respiratory products to clinical studies and commercialisation.
  • Support the development of analytical methods used to test orally inhaled drug products such as assay, emitted dose, aerodynamic particle size analysis and dissolution.
  • Perform analyses to generate scientific understanding during development of drug product formulations, manufacturing processes and device optimisation.
  • Process data: highlight aberrant or suspect results and work with supervisor to investigate.
  • Maintain laboratory documentation in accordance with good documentation practices.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation.
  • Contribute to project delivery by carrying out other tasks (e.g., laboratory housekeeping, ordering, shipping samples) as required.

About Your Skills & Experience

For this role, we’re looking for a candidate who has an effective combination of the following qualifications, skills and experiences:

  • Must be registered on an undergraduate chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences related degree program, must have completed at least 2 years of study and must not have graduated at the start of the placement.
  • Must be familiar with the basic principles of analytical chemistry
  • Must possess good IT skills (Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Must be able to work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Must be able to organise tasks allocated by supervisor and plan own work to consistently achieve output of high-quality results in a timely manner, following established analytical methods and operating procedures.
  • Must have enthusiasm to work in a lab-based role
  • Must have good written and oral communication

Additional desirable skills and experience

  • Has knowledge and/or experience of modern instrumental methods of analysis, e.g., HPLC,
  • Experience or knowledge in development and testing of Inhalation Products.
  • Good understanding of laboratory safety and best practice.
  • Knowledge of cGMP
