Brand and Content is one of four departments in the Marketing & Digital Directorate, responsible for the planning, development and delivery of VisitScotland’s brand, creative, content, partnership marketing, visitor experience touchpoints and user experience (UX) output to support the needs of the organisation and our pan-agency marketing projects.
As the guardians of VisitScotland’s brand, the teams ensure that all our creative content and campaign outputs are consistent and aligned to its values, essence and attributes by managing the organisation’s brand identity and various sub-brand, campaign and product propositions.
Working with colleagues across the organisation, the Design team is integral to the successful delivery of the organisation’s brand and digital content activities and the development and optimisation of its digital platforms across all B2B and B2C activities.
The Junior Digital Designer role is one of the core creative roles within the Design team.
Background to the role
Reporting to the Design Manager, the post holder plays a key role in supporting the core business design requirements of the organisation, received via, and managed by, a busy digital helpdesk.
The role is responsible for conceiving, producing and communicating design solutions within the department and across the business as a whole. There will also be a contribution to large-scale projects
on a supporting basis and a requirement to provide qualitative and quantitative testing and critique of work produced by colleagues.
The department plays a pivotal role in driving growth in the visitor economy through a programme of user focused design across medium to connect more visitors with tourism business across Scotland.
What is the job
Training and support will be provided in order to:
- Produce graphic, UI and UX design work to the team’s defined standards. Creating flexible layouts that consider a global audience and an ever-changing range of devices.
- Contribute to the creative ideation process for digital content and digital projects ensuring alignment with the organisation’s target audiences/markets and with consideration of project objectives and key performance indicators.
- Attend creative sessions with stakeholders to help interpret and refine creative briefs and requirements, following our established design methodologies to provide design guidance and rationale where necessary.
- Present creative routes to colleagues and stakeholders, listening and acting on feedback to ensure the final approach meets guidelines and provides an optimal solution to the project aims and channel of delivery.
- Be responsible for the accurate estimation of time for all assigned work and for managing short and long term workloads, and reporting on progress to the team and relevant stakeholders, in line with our agile way of working.
- Service core business design tasks across a wide range of digital assets including the creation of digital graphics for web & mobile layouts, applications, templates and assets. This requires supporting the daily helpdesk activity ensuring the priorities are clarified and progressed within the department to meet stakeholder requirements, providing status updates to the Studio Manager and other members of the ‘Planning and Delivery’ team as appropriate.
- Be responsible for adhering to design standards in usability, user experience and accessibility, and that all work adheres to appropriate quality checks.
- Be responsible for the creative support to consumer and partner digital marketing campaigns, leading the design of emails, infographics, banners, adverts and interactive content working closely with campaign and content managers to meet the objectives and timings of the campaigns.
- Contribute to team meetings, creative sessions, brainstorming and team reporting.
What you must have
- A good understanding of graphic design principles and web design best practise
- A portfolio of work (academic or experience based)
- User focussed approach to design
- Self-starter and self-learner, keen to acquire and share knowledge and skills, and stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and thinking in design and UX
- Well-practised in the creation of wireframes, prototypes and mock-ups
- Fluent with the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of applications in-particular Photoshop & Illustrator
- A solid grasp of Responsive Web Design principles including mobile first design and progressive enhancement
- A strong focus and attention to detail, with a passion for pixel perfect design
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
