Do you want to make a real impact? Are you full of fresh ideas and eager to solve problems? The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is looking for four Interns to join our Policy and Public Affairs Team this summer!

The role

We are looking for creative thinkers with excellent communication skills who are eager to make a difference in our region. We're the regional government of the West Midlands, working hard to build a fairer, greener, and healthier future for everyone.

You’ll support our communications with decision-makers, research topics relevant to our work, support the delivery of key priorities, including the single settlement, and help us advocate for the West Midlands.

Here's what you will do

  • Dive into research on key policy areas.
  • Support the drafting of responses to consultations.
  • Develop stakeholder engagement plans and help shape our communications.
  • Assist the team with administrative tasks.
  • Help plan and support external meetings and events.

We're a collaborative team who get things done. We expect the same from you and there will be plenty of support and learning opportunities along the way.

About you

  • You have excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • You are a creative thinker who can present ideas clearly.
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment and are eager to learn new things.
  • You are motivated, positive, and enjoy working as part of a team.
  • You have a passion for the West Midlands

You do not need an existing background in politics or policy. We look forward to seeing great applications from women, ethnic minorities and under-represented groups including care leavers.

This 2-month internship (July-August) offers

  • A chance to make a real difference to people’s lives across the West Midlands.
  • Valuable experience in communications, project management, and the world of politics and public affairs.
  • The opportunity to work alongside a passionate and supportive team.

Our application process

To apply for the internship, you will be asked to answer the following questions:

  • Pick an issue you care about in the West Midlands. Whether it's sports facilities, the local music scene, or educational opportunities, explain the challenge and your proposed solution. How would you use your unique skills to tackle it?
  • What makes your local area special? Share why you love where you live and what matters to you about the community.
  • Why are you excited about this internship? Why are you applying, and what do you hope to gain from your time with us?

You will also be given the opportunity to tell us more about any prior part-time work, volunteering or any other projects and initiatives you have been involved in.

Examples do not need to be from politics or policy (although they can be) Talk about what matters most to you!
