Here is a taste of what you can expect from this internship
This vacancy is for an Engineering Intern working in our Hardware Development Team at our development and manufacturing site in Poole, Dorset.
- Develop hardware and software designs based on requirements specifications
- Schematic entry of designs and PCB layout using CAD tools
- Manufacture hardware, soldering components and testing hardware with test software
- Write and test software in Python and/or C
- Mechanical part design using 3D CAD (Autocad or Autodesk Fusion 360) and place orders with external companies for the manufacture of metalwork.
- Design and rapid prototype additional plastic parts using mechanical CAD software and our in-house rapid prototyping systems
- Assemble and test final product and complete all production documentation
The candidate
We are looking for an innovative and inquisitive candidate, progressing towards a degree in electrical/electronic engineering who is keen to work on mixed hardware and software development projects and can demonstrate basic skill in some or all of the following:
- Can read and interpret design specifications
- Can read circuit diagrams
- Understand the basic use of transistors, FET’s, and op-amps in simple circuits
- Can use an oscilloscope and other diagnostic lab tools such as multimeters
Whilst not essential, it would be a bonus if you already have experience with
- Can design and construct electronic circuits on prototype boards
- Have some experience of PCB design and layout using CAD tools
- Have some experience of testing and fault-finding electronic circuits
- Knowledge of Python, with additional languages such as C an advantage
Minimum educational requirements
- A-Level A, B, B - one of which must be mathematics
- IB 6,5,5 at HL to include Mathematics with a minimum of 30 points overall
- BTEC – Applicants with electrical/electronic BTEC options may also be considered

Recruitment process
Applications for our internships will close on 21st January 2024.
We will be holding in-person 'Getting to know Yu' days between mid February – early March 2024 which will allow candidates the best opportunity to showcase their potential and suitability for this role by using a variety of assessment types. This session will be held in an afternoon or morning slot and will typically include a combination of tasks and activities such as group problem-solving tasks, individual interviews, presentations, and role simulation exercises.
For some roles, there will also be an initial video (Microsoft Teams) or telephone interview - these are likely to be held during February 2024, before the Getting to Know Yu day. These interviews are typically competency based and a chance for us to find out what your motivations are for your next career.
Our 2024 interns will join the business in early September 2024 so you must be available from this time, for 12 months.
