Christopher is an Economics & Spanish graduate from Durham University. He secured an Asset Origination Graduate role at Rothesay, through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I really enjoyed Economics at A-Level, so it felt like a natural subject to pursue at university. Moving into finance was a logical next step when considering a career, as I enjoy the combination of numerical and written work.
I enjoy working with others and have always been passionate about learning about different cultures and meeting new people. Speaking Spanish and spending a year abroad in Chile was incredibly rewarding, and I relish the fact that my work now involves collaboration.”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
“I felt that this role played to my strengths, combining both numerical and written work.
I was encouraged by everything I found online about a private company growing at an impressive rate and genuinely investing in its employees. The bulk pension annuity market is also extremely exciting and offers an opportunity to work in an expanding and potentially more rewarding financial sector than traditional banking.”
What was the application journey like?
“I found learning as much as possible about the company and industry very rewarding. It was especially helpful to think through how the business model worked and to form my own views on risks and strategy. These informed the questions I asked in interviews and helped spark meaningful conversations.
I went through multiple interview rounds with different employees. They were very engaging and gave me the opportunity not only to demonstrate my strengths and suitability for the role but also to learn more about the company beyond what was available online.
After each interview, I became even more determined to succeed in the process. The employees I met spoke very highly of the company and made it feel like a genuinely great place to work. I really appreciated the conversational nature of the interviews—it felt much less robotic than other processes I had experienced.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“I secured the graduate role following my internship the previous summer, which I applied to through Bright Network.”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
“I’m proud to have been hired in a competitive job market. I also completed the interviews and preparation in South America whilst on my year abroad and overcame various challenges related to a fully remote interview process.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
"I’d recommend learning as much as possible about how the company operates and understanding its business model. Make full use of the company’s website and relevant news articles about the industry.
Don’t overlook the importance of identifying the skills and knowledge needed for the role you’re applying for. Try to understand how the position fits into the wider company function.
I’d also suggest considering the risks and trends that could impact the company and the role. And remember—if you get the chance, ask lots of questions!"
