Swayam's success story: Securing an Industrial Placement at Personio

Created on 2 Sep 2024

Swayam is a Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence student from the University of Leeds. He secured a Technology Consultancy Placement at Personio Automation Consultants through Bright Network.

First, we’d love for you to tell us a little bit about yourself?

“My career path reflects my passion for technology, problem-solving and continuous learning. Growing up, I wanted to be an inventor or an engineer. I was fascinated by technology and loved the idea of building innovative solutions to make life easier and more efficient.

I chose to study Computer Science with AI at university to develop essential skills and learn from experienced professors, whilst getting to learn in a collaborative environment, engaging in research and hands-on projects and connecting with like-minded individuals.

I’m motivated by the opportunity to leverage technology to solve real-world problems and improve business processes. Consultancy allows me to work on diverse projects across industries, continuously learn, and help businesses optimize operations and drive innovation.”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“I was motivated for a few different reasons! I wanted to work with a leading Agile and DevOps consultancy aligned perfectly with my passion for technology and continuous learning. The role involved assisting the consultancy team with complex client projects, such as data migrations, software upgrades, and performance testing, which appealed to my problem-solving skills and desire to tackle real-world challenges."

"Additionally, I was excited by the chance to gain hands-on experience with internal infrastructure and to work with leading customers across the UK."

"I saw this position as a chance to leverage my technical skills, collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for technology to contribute to the success of Automation Consultants and its clients.”

What was your application journey like?

“My application journey was smoother than I expected. I polished up my technical knowledge, researched as much as I could about the company and its key stakeholders, and most importantly did a lot of mock interviews so I wasn’t nervous too on the day of the interview.

One thing I was nervous about was the technical interview because no matter how much you polish up your knowledge there can always be a question that you might not know the answer to.

Luckily my interviewer made sure I knew that they didn’t expect me to know everything, which was reassuring.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“It was really challenging filling out so many applications, doing lots of assessments and interviews and still getting a lot of rejections.”

“But once I secured the role I wanted, it felt rewarding to see that persistence does pay off and that all my work had been worth it.”

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“Using the Bright Network platform allowed me to filter roles based on my preferences. Also, being able to see a preview for the job opportunity before checking it made it easier for me to find the role I wanted. Bright Network also sent me weekly emails with new opportunities that had been posted!”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“Don’t give up after a few rejections. I must have gotten at least 100, but I had a target and believe that with every rejection I learnt something new, which in the end made me a better candidate in the long run.

One thing I would have done differently is that I could have done more research and preparation before the interviews and assessment centres.

Use AI to your advantage when for recorded answers and answer them within the time limit to make sure you’re concise – that helped me a lot!”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I’m really looking forward to working with and learning from experienced professionals, working with different clients and teams and improving my collaborative and conflict resolution skills.

I’m looking forward to attending sector events and networking with industry leaders and peers is something I’m particularly excited about.

I’m most excited about the prospect of contributing to digital transformation initiatives and leveraging automation to improve business processes.”
