The Fuel and Inerting Systems Domain is a dynamic organisation that is recognised worldwide as a technical leader in commercial Fuel Systems, with key involvement in all major Airbus commercial aircraft programmes. As part of the team responsible for providing complete Fuel Systems, from concept through to customer support for all Airbus aircraft, you will be at the forefront of these developments.

About us

We are predominantly situated in the UK and are responsible for the architecture, design, aircraft integration, certification and in-service support of all aspects of Fuel Systems and Inerting Systems. The domain is split into five groups each with their own expertise and skills:-

  • Control, Monitoring and HMI
  • Gauging and Mechatronics
  • Refuel, Ventilation and Transfer Systems
  • Engine and APU Feed Systems
  • Inerting and Fuel Sciences

Fuel and Inerting Systems present many technical and business challenges that need to be understood and managed. They operate in a very hostile environment at extremes of temperature and humidity, with the added challenge of intrinsic safety due to the volatile nature of jet fuel. Given that fuel is contained mostly in the wings of modern aircraft, it is not surprising that Fuel and Inerting Systems are a significant factor in aircraft weight, cost and reliability.

What you will be doing

The philosophy of the Fuel and Inerting Systems Domain is to have the best systems, people and partnerships, thus becoming a reference for the Fuel and Inerting Aviation industry. Our placement students will have the opportunity to develop their skills and grow both as Engineers and Team Leaders. We are keen to have new Student Engineers who want to develop their full potential, and take on challenging roles.

As a placement student in our team, the work you carry out will cover many topics including, but not limited to:-

  • Fuel Tank Modelling and Simulation
  • Control and Interfaces
  • Ground and Flight Transfer of Fuel
  • Fuel Jettison
  • Fuel Tank Inerting
  • Cockpit Interfaces
  • Built In Test/Health Monitoring

We are entering an exciting time in our industry, with the focus very much on environmentally sustainable aviation. Therefore the topics listed above are not just limited to traditional kerosene-based fuel systems, but also to new and novel technologies - the design of current and future fuel systems, and the impact that novel fuels such as Hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel will have on these systems is of high importance and interest to enable Airbus to lead aviation into the future.

Skills required

Please note, we love your interest in working for Airbus but we do ask that you make only one application. We encourage you to take time to decide which of our exciting opportunities is right for you and then submit an application that best represents you, your skills and experience in connection with the role you have selected.

One application: Make It Possible, Make It Happen, Make It … Count !

Please note our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement.

We are looking for students who are studying for an engineering or technical degree. This can include (but is not limited to) the following areas of expertise:-

  • Mechanical;
  • Aerospace;
  • Chemistry;
  • Electrical;
  • Computers/Programming.

Successful candidates will also be able to demonstrate the following skills and behaviors:

  • A natural curiosity and excitement to explore engineering principles and creating solutions based on technical intuition and evidence
  • An ability to communicate clearly and concisely - collaboration skills within our team are essential
  • Excellent organisation skills - to plan the use of resources to complete goals and objectives to a high standard
  • An understanding and appreciation of the future of aviation - specifically the impact that new fuels and technologies can have on Fuel and Inerting System design
  • A keen interest in the Aerospace industry and profession

Our Placement Engineers operate in a very challenging environment, where they will be given a real and valued role within the Fuel and Inerting Systems Team. The team is running a number of parallel programmes and as such new student Engineers will get a real insight into the operation of business and one of its more complex and varied systems. You will get the opportunity to have multiple placements working with experienced teams across the Airbus Aircraft Family, from new developments through to in-service Aircraft, as well as working transnationally alongside customers, suppliers and manufacturing assembly where necessary.
