Position scope

The Industrial Placement Student position in the NPD packaging team will execute a variety of packaging Innovation & Renovation projects in support of the business objectives.

The ideal candidate must have the ability to work across a broad-range of packaging material types (e.g. plastic films, corrugated board, paperboard, PET bottles etc.), ensure food safety, and provide value to the customer while controlling overall costs.

This position must work closely with internal customers across multiple locations (UK and Portugal) and functional areas such as operations, procurement, quality etc, as well as external suppliers to successfully deliver projects against businesses requirements. A successful candidate would be self-motivated with a passion for exceeding customer expectations.

Essential responsibilities

  • Support in managing multiple projects of either a continuous improvement nature (cost savings, productivity gains, and process improvements), sustainability, or to fulfill a specific customer need.
  • Technical support to create new/revise existing packaging specifications across all phases of development; responsible for the maintenance of packaging specifications within SAP.
  • Assist in overseeing plant trials in support of project implementation; reporting against predetermined key performance indicators to gain adoption within the Operations group.
  • Identifies packaging related waste and material standardization opportunities; implementing improvements when supported by a business case.
  • Support the technical packaging and sustainability program in collaboration with cross- functional teams (including but not limited to Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Sales & Marketing) .
  • Performs other departmental duties as assigned.

Education and skill requirements

  • You will currently be enrolled on an undergraduate course at a UK university, studying in a field related to Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Engineering Design etc.
  • Entry-level role, so no prior experience working directly with packaging development is required.
  • Basic knowledge of a broad range of materials and manufacturing processes, as covered in university modules, is preferred.
  • A grounding in technical drawing and/or computer aided design, would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under supervision as well as unsupervised and to prioritize the workload to meet project objectives.
  • Adaptable and able to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Driven individual who is willing to learn and progress their career within research and development within then food or FMCG industry.
  • Comfortable presenting to their colleagues and senior leadership.

This role has no supervisory responsibility. Less than 5% travel for business meetings; travel frequency will be minimal and will be based on business needs.
