This internship offers exciting opportunities working within the Wireline sector of Baker Hughes. The UK site designs and manufactures a diverse range of electromechanical products that operate in deep oil & gas wells, under extreme environments.

The applicant will be a core member of a small team working closely with other electronic, mechanical and software engineers to develop the next generation of downhole tools in addition to improving the existing product fleet.

Your skills in electrical engineering, design, and analysis, will be pushed to provide you with the valuable industrial experience sought by recruiters for future permanent roles in the engineering field.

You will join a team of interns working in a wide variety of roles at the Farnborough location. This will present opportunities to engage in cross-functional projects and ensure that there are like-minded individuals to share your experience with, both in an out of the office.

Experience you will gain

The electrical engineering intern will gain valuable experience in the following areas:

  • Analysis, design and test of electronic circuit boards, test equipment and downhole tools.
  • Schematic design and component selection for high temperature electronics.
  • Physical assembly and testing of components to validate designs.
  • Real-world application of engineering analysis using circuit simulation and data analysis using Matlab and/or Python.
  • Development of embedded software in C/C++ and test applications using C# or Labview.
  • Preparation of drawings and other manufacturing information.
  • Working as part of a team and independently to solve engineering problems.
  • Building positive relationships with clients, customers, and external suppliers.

They will gain understanding of and eventually be able to execute the full manufacturing lifecycle - from planning, through purchasing, manufacture, final assembly, and testing. They will learn drawing and documentation practices, design standards, product safety rules, and how to devise testing schemes. They will be given ‘design freedom’ and the ability to solve problems as they see appropriate.

Typical projects

  • Designing new products, prototypes or testing equipment.
  • Updating the design of existing products.
  • Verification of designs via computer modelling or real world assessment under extreme environmental conditions (177°C & 1,400bar).

Key qualification/experience required

  • Working towards BEng / Meng in Electrical Engineering or related degree.
  • Academic Qualifications – A or A* at A-level (or equivalent) including Maths and Physics.
  • For graduates, a 2:1 or higher in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or another related degree with substantial electronics content.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Highly motivated, self-starting approach with a desire to learn new skills.
