Position Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Cyber Security & Support Student Placement to work with our IT team. The role will enable the successful intern to develop their skills across a range of services during their placement year whilst working in a professional environment.

The role will report to the Barbour Information Security Manager and will focus on Cyber Security but also provide a solid understanding of ITIL processes by working on a busy service desk. A key part of the role will be to undertake preventative analysis, proactive protection of assets and threat hunting utilising industry leading products to identify, protect and detect threats in our environment. In addition, the role will work on cyber security improvement projects. We’re looking for an energetic and proactive individual with the attitude to work on foundational processes, and desire to learn new skills, across Cyber Security within our supportive team and working environment.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Identify:

  • Asset Management: Ensure that assets are managed through their lifecycle and provide 1st line support on the introduction, management & decommissioning of devices.

Protect:

  • Access Control: Account creation and closure to provide users with the least possible access to undertake their roles. Working with privileged account management software to improve the usage of privileged and service accounts.
  • Training and Awareness: Manage the Cyber Security training and awareness process including the reporting on cyber security compliance and follow-up training and guidance.
  • Maintenance: Resolve incidents in alignment with the agreed Barbour services.
  • Protective Technology: Review & assess vulnerabilities across our environment and work with the Infrastructure and Service Operation teams to migrate and resolve.
  • Projects: Working with the team on critical cyber security projects.

Detect:

  • Detection: Managing mail filtering and phishing alerts to identify, detect and analyse threats.
  • Monitoring: Monitor tooling for alerts and performing initial triage as required.

Skills and Experience

  • Understanding of core cyber security concepts and best practices
  • Understanding of the basics of cyber security governance and frameworks
  • Basic networking and modern workplace (operating) systems
  • Basic knowledge of service desk and ITIL processes
  • Ability and willingness to work within an SLA framework
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues and third parties including best practice source control and documentation.
  • Right first-time attitude and high level of accuracy
  • Proactive approach to continuous improvement and problem solving
  • Ability to adapt communication approach to audience regardless of level in the organisation

Additional Information:

  • To apply for this placement, you must be currently studying an Undergraduate Sandwich Degree Course and able to undertake 12 months in industry as part of your course.
