BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three and four cylinder petrol engines, and precision machining key engine components, the plant has recently celebrated 20 years of successful production. Operating seven days a week, with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.

We are currently seeking a committed and driven individual to join our Quality Department for a 24-month graduate programme, commencing September 2022. The Quality Department as a whole is responsible for maintaining and improving the quality management system for the whole plant, interfacing with the Machining and Assembly production departments particularly. This graduate role will entail working primarily within our Product Audit & Performance Test and Metrology & Calibration Services departments. Product Audit and Performance Test has the responsibility of ensuring that all Powertrain units built at Hams Hall conform to the Engineering Design specifications and legal requirements, including petrol combustion engines and High Voltage Batteries- whilst our Metrology and Calibration Services department provides measurement services to the organisation. We ensure the validity of measurements are maintained to acceptable requirements, involving the calibration of equipment, to bespoke measurements of all components used in the production process.

What will you be doing? 

  • New Product Introduction - ensuring all facilities and processes are in place to support new engine variants and technical upgrades to new model introduction.
  • Data Management & Analytics - supporting systems used for data management and analysis, including programming, and creating visualisation software.
  • Facility Management - update and upgrade facilities for process improvement activities.
  • Project Management - support Engineer with project management activities, including leading project review meeting to managing the expedition of tasks.
  • Prepare process documentations.
  • Verify Test & Measurement Data - be able to discern measurement results and plan next steps.
  • Problem Resolution - support and sometimes lead technical investigations to support area goals.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Successfully completed a university degree in an Engineering related discipline (eg. Mechanical, Production, Mechatronics), to a 2:1 standard or higher. 
  • Relevant industrial experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
  • Excellent IT skills (in particular Excel, PowerPoint etc.).
  • Excellent English communication skills (German is an advantage), and the ability to work well within a team.
  • Strong commitment and ability to work independently, with excellent organisation and time management skills.
  • An ability to understand engineering drawings and measurement principles, as well as a systematic approach to problem solving.
  • You will need a valid driving licence for this position.
