Are you looking for an exciting internship opportunity at one of the UK’s largest health charities?

    Why we need you

Cancer Research UK is the world’s largest charity dedicated to beating all types of cancer. We now have an opportunity for you to join us as a Global Intern.

    What will I be doing?

You will be part of the Global Team sitting within our Policy, Information and Communications department.

This internship is an ideal opportunity for people at the beginning of their career in Global Health/International Development who are looking to focus on policy and or advocacy. You will support three areas within the Global team: HPV vaccination implementation in Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs): tobacco control policy implementation in LMICs; and cross-border research collaboration with a focus on UK-EU relations.

The intern will sit in the Global team and will support:

    - Advocacy and communications on HPV vaccination implementation approx. 40% of your time, with focus on Cervical Cancer Action for Elimination (CCAE), an advocacy network that CRUK co-chairs with the American Cancer Society, designing external-facing communications, and developing one or two virtual communication training sessions which will be focused on supporting advocates to communicate the importance of cervical cancer prevention and treatment.

    - Advocacy and communications on tobacco control approx. 30% of your time, with focus on the upcoming WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) COP10

    - The communications plan (including, for example, political stakeholder mapping, infographics, social media) for our new post-Brexit policy report, which will set out CRUK’s new policy calls for the future UK-EU relationship approx. 30% of your time.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Develop a strong understanding of the FCTC and CRUK’s status as an observer to COP 10.  Stay up to date on UK and global policy development of tobacco control and e-cigarette debates.
    • Support on design and content of advocacy and communication materials for the UK government, international governments, and NGO’s for the lead up to COP10.
    • Develop a strong understanding of the WHO’s global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem, and the barriers, opportunities and stakeholders surrounding global cervical cancer prevention and treatment and stay up to date on developments within cervical cancer, particularly regarding HPV vaccination.
    • Manage CCAE’s social media accounts and WordPress website, including writing and coordinating posts, tweets, blogs and op eds.
    • Design and deliver 1-2  virtual capacity-strengthening sessions focused on communication for advocates working on cervical cancer prevention and treatment. This will include securing attendance and experts for each session, planning the content and scheduling of each session, completing a short summary report on all sessions.
    • Help to identify and build relationships with potential partners supporting efforts towards cervical cancer ‘elimination’ and equitable HPV vaccination in order to grow CCAE’s global footprint.
    • Support the design and content of influencing materials for UK and EU stakeholders. Includes work with CRUK’s design experts ‘The Studio’ to create a suite of graphics to help us tell the story of our UK-EU policy research and to communicate our new calls as effectively as possible.
    • Monitor external developments in the UK-EU relationship to support stakeholder mapping.

What skills are you looking for?

You’ll be able to bring to the role:

    • Interest in Global Health/International Development and the international political environment
    • Written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write for a range of audiences
    • Synthesise and condense information into communication assets

This role will add real value to Cancer Research UK so we want to ensure you’re getting a lot out of it too. How do I apply?

Please apply online by uploading your details and answering an application question. Please complete an application form for only one Internship role.

    Stage 2: Assessment

If your initial application is successful you will then be invited to complete our new situational judgment test. The test poses real life scenarios that a CRUK intern might be met with in their day to day role and asks how you would tackle that scenario. This is un-timed and multiple choice. Please let us know if you think you might require adjustments for this assessment.

    Stage 3:Audio Submission

If you are successful in the previous stage, you will be asked to complete an audio submission, answering competency-based questions. The questions will be emailed to you and you will have a few days to submit a response via an audio recording (no video required).
