Described by our clients as ‘passionate’, ‘innovative’, ‘collaborative’: Buro Happold is an independent, international engineering practice that over the last 40 years has become synonymous with the delivery of creative, value led building and city solutions for an ever-changing world. Having worked on every continent, our clients include more than 90% of the world’s leading architectural practices and we have collaborated with global organisations such as the United Nations, The World Bank and UNESCO. Through our global community of driven, world leading engineering professionals we deliver elegant solutions for buildings and cities that seek to address the major problems facing societies today.

As an organisation we strive for progress and are committed to finding new and better ways to deliver elegant solutions. We recognise that this can only happen if our people can keep up with, create and implement the latest developments in technology and ideas. We offer learning and development opportunities at every level, to help shape exciting and personally satisfying careers and ensure our engineers stay at the cutting edge of industry thought.

The Role

Digital technology is advancing at pace and continuing to shape the built environment. Buro Happold provide the technology expertise clients require to determine and implement their digital vision. Our clients can benefit from bespoke strategies, followed by robust engineering solutions that holistically consider risk, operational requirements, the business case for technology investment and the wider architectural vision. By engaging in leading research and development, we navigate and influence industry and the regulatory and statutory landscape.

Our experience and position across digital technology and the construction industry uniquely qualifies us to offer services uncommon to traditional engineering practices. We work directly with clients to uncover benefits that can be realised through the successful deployment of a broad range of technologies. Alongside this, we work with architects, technical specialists, utilities providers, technology providers, contractors, engineers and other stakeholders across all project phases to ensure the building design scheme is capable of meeting the current and future digital needs of its users.

What sort of projects would I work on?

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, UK: We worked closely with Tottenham Hotspur from early stage design through to construction, site support and beyond. Our design ensures the stadium has the capability to host premier league, champions league, NFL and concerts.

Louvre, Abu Dhabi: Through our work the museum has benefited from a range of technologies such as museum guide systems and visitor counting, that improves experience and operational effectiveness, whilst being ready for supporting future technologies as they become viable.

Kuwait University, Kuwait: As part of an entirely new mega-campus for Kuwait University, our Technology team developed a set of modular systems that would allow different types of educational spaces to be equipped with a variety of different digital tools. The modular approach allowed the University to reduce initial capitol outlay whilst still being able to offer best in breed technologies across their lecturing portfolio.

What would I do?

  • Challenge existing ways of working in order to break new ground and to find new solutions to existing problems.
  • Work on complex architectural designs and develop and integrate workable and bespoke technology solutions (basic knowledge of BIM technology and 3D modelling is advantageous).
  • Manage various projects and commit to ensure deadlines are consistently met.

Requirements

We are a proudly diverse team with academic backgrounds and qualifications that span electronics and communication, IT, cognitive science, product design engineering, mechanical and energy engineering, project management, building information modelling, and so on.

We are looking for graduates and interns who can contribute to our broad range of skills and have a keen interest in technology and the benefits it can bring to organisations and people; be it commercial, operational, environmental or experiential.

The culture of Buro Happold is permissive, supporting graduates and interns in taking ownership of their learning and development, defining their own specialism and ultimately their role within the wider organisation, provided it aligns with core business objectives.

What you can expect from us

A good balance of interesting and challenging projects to stretch your professional skills, a friendly and close knit team, flexible working and a competitive reward package. The opportunity to work on multidisciplinary projects aside a range of specialist engineers and designers both within Buro Happold and our collaborators.

We have recently adopted a new framework focussed on early careers development. This allows our Graduates to learn the fundamentals of design and technology whilst building a base in consulting and professional skills. This is a blended learning programme where participants gain experience against our internal professional and technical frameworks in relation to their specialism.

In addition, we see membership of a professional body and professional registration as crucial to the development of our engineers and offer substantial support to those aspiring to achieve this. We aim to support employees to achieve the highest level of membership and registration their academic background allows.
