Hedy Lamarr embodied the spirit of innovation and self-teaching. She made her name as a Hollywood film star in the 1930s and 40s; despite having no formal training in science and technology, she loved working on various inventions in her spare time and taught herself everything that she needed to know. Some of her early ideas included a tablet that you could drop into a glass of water to make a fizzy drink, and an improved design for a traffic light.

During World War II, she heard about the problem of radio-controlled torpedoes being easily jammed by enemy signals, so she came up with the idea of a frequency-hopping spread-spectrum system that would defeat the jamming. She worked with her friend, composer George Antheil, to turn this into reality using a miniature automated piano playing mechanism to control the frequency of radio signals. This system was eventually adopted by the US Navy in the 1960s and then went on to form the basis of how Bluetooth and WiFi operate.
