Are you looking for an exciting internship opportunity at one of the UK’s largest health charities?

Why we need you

Cancer Research UK is the world’s largest charity dedicated to beating all types of cancer. We now have an opportunity for you to join us as a Test Evidence Transition Engagement Intern.

Role and purpose

The Social & Behavioural Research (SBR) team conducts and commissions methodologically robust research and evaluation targeting prevention, screening, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

We work closely with other teams across CRUK’s Policy Information and Communications (PIC) Directorate and with external partners and stakeholders to generate evidence needed to inform policy and practice, ultimately leading to better outcomes for people affected by cancer.

The Test, Evidence, Transition Programme is a key component of our SBR commissioning portfolio. The programme aims to accelerate the effective adoption and implementation of innovations across health systems, whilst working to reduce inequalities to proven interventions. The programme provides funding and facilitated support to selected local health systems teams and evaluation partners, all working together to ensure that “best practice is rolled out consistently, effectively and equitably across health systems to benefit everyone” (Cancer Research UK Strategy, 2022).

Active stakeholder engagement and an ability to create informative and compelling communications are critical aspects of ‘Test, Evidence, Transition’ (TET), designed to inform and influence key health system audiences, in creating the right conditions for effective innovations to be sustained and transitioned into mainstream practice.

This intern role will support the delivery of our coordinated plan of engagement and communication activity for TET, liaising with identified internal CRUK colleagues and external programme partner organisations and funders.

In supporting this objective, the postholder will help to create engaging content, communicated via a range of channels, focused on three key elements:

  • to organise engagement activities and events that will maximise stakeholder contribution and impact learning;
  • to gather and disseminate overall Programme implementation progress and insight, impact and findings;
  • to engage Patient Advisory Group members, supporting the development of resources for patient involvement activities and the organisation and facilitation of Patient Advisory Group meetings.

The Intern will also be an integral member of the SBR team during the placement, liaising with our researchers and managers and gaining exposure and insight to our full research portfolio and external partnerships potentially including an academic partnership we have with the Centre for Health Service Studies at the University of Kent.

Key responsibilities

  • Contribute to the production of summary reports, analyses and presentations monitoring the evaluation and impact of the TET programme
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to create engaging programme workshops and events involving project partners and key stakeholders
  • Contribute to summaries, reports and briefings (such as web pages, newsletters, etc) to support all TET communications
  • Maximise internal CRUK communication channels including ‘Hit the Floor’ and the PIC ‘Lunch and Learn’ events etc., to raise the profile of the TET programme
  • Keep up to date with the overall TET portfolio to understand the successes and challenges, being confident to articulate these with internal colleagues across SBR and with external partners
  • Supporting the organisation and development of resources for key stakeholder meetings

What skills are you looking for?

You’ll be able to bring to the role:

  • Written, listening and verbal communication skills with an ability to flex communication style and narrative to suit a variety of audiences and settings
  • Interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain effective working relationships internally across PIC
  • Ability to prioritise effectively as well as project manage competing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to simplify complex information and to develop a narrative and ‘tell a story’ with data and impact measurement in a way which is both engaging and informative
  • Understanding of the aims of the charity and the importance of internal and external collaboration

What will I gain?

This role will add real value to Cancer Research UK so we want to ensure you’re getting a lot out of it too. As an intern you’ll go through a structured development programme with skills training in project management, CV writing and interview skills and you’ll have a buddy to help you settle in. You’ll be eligible for many of our benefits, including paid holiday, and you’ll gain key experience to help you launch your career.

How do I apply?

Please apply online by uploading your details and answering an application question. Please complete an application form for only one Internship role.

One of our values at CRUK is Being Human. We want to hear about why you’re interested in CRUK and what is motivating you to apply. So, we discourage the use of AI when completing your application form and throughout the process.

Application process

Stage 1: Online application

Complete an online application form – you’ll be asked to answer a motivational competency question and upload your CV.

In our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, we operate an anonymised shortlisting process. Please therefore ensure that you have completed the work history section of the application form in full and that you have answered all application questions, as this is the information we will be using to shortlist. CVs are required to be uploaded for all applications, as they will be collected for use later in the process.  If you experience any problems submitting an application, please email earlycareers@cancer.org.uk

Stage 2: Assessment

If your initial application is successful you will then be invited to complete our new situational judgment test. The test poses real life scenarios that a CRUK intern might be met with in their day to day role and asks how you would tackle that scenario. This is un-timed and multiple choice. Please let us know if you think you might require adjustments for this assessment.

Stage 3: Audio Submission

If you are successful in the previous stage, you will be asked to complete an audio submission, answering competency-based questions. The questions will be emailed to you and you will have a few days to submit a response via an audio recording (no video required).

Stage 4: Interviews

If you are successful in the previous stage, you will then be invited to a face-to-face interview at our head office with representatives from the team you are applying to.

The Internship will start on Monday 1st July 2024.
