About the role

Working within the Materials Engineering team at Caterpillar you will be collaborating with diverse engineering teams and we are looking for your innovative ideas!

As an equal opportunity employer, we value diversity at Caterpillar and we believe the more experience you can gain early in your career the further you can go. Working with technical specialists, you can apply your university degree knowledge in applications with cast iron, aluminium, steel and non-metallic materials, examining microstructures and conducting failure investigations on the SEM. Competency on various testing machines such as Vickers, Brinell and Rockwell hardness can be achieved. Your report writing skills will also be honed as the data you collect in the lab will be written in a professional report sent out to the customer

Do not be put off if you don’t have a vast knowledge of engines. The inner workings of an engine will become clear as the majority of your time will be spent in the lab being hands on with every project. By the end of the year, you will know a camshaft from a connecting rod.

Working and collaborating with people in Caterpillar facilities worldwide, we are looking for you to bring fresh, innovative ideas to solve complex technical problems. You will be a fully involved team member with responsibility and accountability for key projects as soon as you start, so we need someone that will drive their own progress and a work ethic that matches the team who take material requests from Caterpillar facilities all around Europe. That said, you will be given all the support you require to be successful.

Caterpillar operates a conditional offer process; our highest performing placement students are fast tracked to our graduate development scheme. This includes a financial incentive and the potential of a summer work placement. Offers will be made based on the condition that a graduate role is available at the time of your graduation and that you achieve a min of 2:2.

We hold a Meet and Greet day for all new UK placement students to provide you with an opportunity to meet fellow new starters across the UK before you start your placement.

About you

  • Applicants should be studying for a degree in a Materials Engineering related degree and is essential to be on track to achieve a minimum of a 2:2.
