Our unique programme in more detail

Over 18 months you’ll gain extensive experience within different underwriting teams, a group of (re)insurance professionals who understand risks, how to manage them, and are responsible for deciding exactly what a (re)insurance company will insure.

If you don’t fully understand this now, don’t worry. Our proven approach will give you an in-depth understanding of how we manage risk, as well as providing you with a good understanding of all areas of the company. Don’t yet know anybody in the industry? You soon will, as we’ll give you lots of opportunities to develop a network of contacts within Chaucer and the market.

Your future specialisms

(Re)insurance underwriters analyse and appraise the global risks involved in insuring people and their assets. In a nutshell, the job is to choose what risks Chaucer will insure. To get equipped for this, underwriters are trained in specialist risk assessment and pricing skills. You’ll use those skills, passed on from our experienced experts, to determine what the risk involves and then decide how much protection or coverage the client needs, along with how much they should pay for it.

You’ll learn everything you need on our programme that’s designed to develop your expertise in every aspect of underwriting. We’ll begin with an initial introduction of the risk by the broker, through to assessment of the coverage needed, up to policy pricing and account management. In doing so, you’ll move around different divisions of the business, learning as you go. You’ll understand how we provide insurance for a wide range of risks, from earthquakes to workplace injuries and reinsurance.
