About the project

Costain's’ Integrated Transport Team are currently working for Transport for London (TfL), whom are one of Britain’s key City Local Authorities. They are responsible for the city’s infrastructure which includes Highways, Major Structures, Rail, River Transport and supporting technology. Many of their assets are reaching their end-of-life status and require substantial remedials or full refurbishment. TfL are keen to embrace modern technology to reduce carbon and energy requirements and deliver a sustainable, clean city.

Costain under a number of Frameworks support TfL in their expansion and sustainability and are one of their major providers for their projects. We are currently undertaking a number of feasibility and concept designs to support future developments and recently won works on the A40 Westway Project, Gallows Corner, George Green/Green Man Tunnels and Brent Cross.

Key tasks & responsibilities

As a Graduate Civil Engineer, you will be responsible for a key element of work on a project taking a significant role in technical delivery as well as managing aspects of time, cost and quality and will acquire technical, leadership and project management skills and experience. This will include undertaking the following tasks:

  • Supervising and managing construction activities from start to finish, ensuring adherence to project plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Planning and sequencing of operations, including writing Method Statements and updating the Safe Systems of Work for our Contractor and Sub-Contractor Works, ensuring compliance of approval dates and information accuracy.
  • Implementing operational quality control including setting out and QA processes
  • Commercial management including reporting project updates and potential risks to the wider team.
  • Design and Design management
  • Analysing and interpreting engineering drawings, survey reports and other technical documentation to guide the construction process.
  • Ensure all aspects of the project align with engineering and design specifications, industry standards and construction regulations.
  • Coordinate the procurement and delivery of construction materials and equipment, ensuring their compliance with industry standards.
  • Identifying potential risks and implementing preventive measures to minimise project delays, cost overruns and safety hazards.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including progress reports, site diaries, and quality control measures.

Costain Graduate Development Programme

The programme will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business and of course, the technical skills you will learn day-to-day on the job.

The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond. We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8-12 months, to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company.

Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way.

In addition to the programme, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership.

Graduates may also have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period across the different sectors we work in.

Please note that for some of our roles, and in order to rotate around the business as part of the graduate scheme, you may be required to obtain and maintain security clearance of at least Security Check level (or SC clearance). To satisfy the requirements, you will need to have been a legal UK resident for a minimum of 5 years and be able to successfully complete the vetting process.
