The role

Reporting to the Friction Stir Welding program manager, you will play a key role in the conception, design, and development of new products and applications. Working in the R&D team focused on exciting new application projects such as Friction Stir Welding and machining products, you will apply your expertise in mechanical design, FEM analysis, and materials/metallurgy to overcome challenges and push the boundaries of what is possible. Based at Element Six’s Global Innovation Centre in Oxfordshire, this is a hands-on position that requires a blend of creativity, technical proficiency, and a keen eye for detail.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks, ensuring they meet customer specification and application requirements.
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEM) to predict how components and materials behave under different conditions and use this data to inform design decisions.
  • Ideate, prototype, and test new product concepts.
  • Work with application teams and customers in solving problems.
  • Apply knowledge of materials and metallurgy to select appropriate materials for different engineering applications.
  • Participate in the entire product development lifecycle, from concept through to production and application testing.
  • Document all phases of research and development, including writing reports, creating design

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field.
  • Proficient in mechanical design, preferably with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Good understanding and experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEM), preferably Abaqus, and its application in product design.
  • Strong foundation in materials science or metallurgy, particularly as it applies to product development.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively to overcome engineering challenges.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
