Our training contracts offer the perfect route into law. Over a two-year period, we’ll give you the knowledge, tools and opportunities to make a truly successful and rewarding legal career.

Whether you are based in the UK, Middle East or Asia, your training will consist of four seats of six months each. During each seat, you'll have a supervisor who will give you regular feedback. You will also receive formal feedback through an appraisal system that takes place in the middle and at the end of each seat.

This system has been honed over a number of years to ensure that you get the most out of your time with us. Ultimately, we want to help you become the next leader in your field and hope that you’ll be part of the next generation to help drive us forward onto even greater heights.

Legal training contracts in the UK

Our UK legal training contracts give you the opportunity to experience four six-month seats over two years. At least one seat must be in a contentious area. You will also have the chance to apply for a secondment at a client office or at another Eversheds Sutherland office in the UK or internationally.

You won't simply be given a conventional development path: you’ll work closely with your supervisor to identify and build on your strengths - and we'll talk to you about how you see your future evolving. We recommend trying as many seats as possible but if there's one you really want to experience, we'll do our best to accommodate you.

Once you qualify, you’ll be able to apply for any of the vacancies on offer. As you might expect, our aim is to retain every trainee on qualification.

For those who are interested in part-time training, this is an option within the firm. Please discuss any requests for part-time working with the Emerging Talent team at any point during the recruitment process or at offer stage.

What we are looking for

Our business attracts great people and we've created an environment where they can achieve great things. So it will come as no surprise that Eversheds Sutherland is home to some of the most innovative and inspiring lawyers in the industry - or that we look for trainees with the ambition and enterprise to keep us ahead of the competition in the future.

True, you will need a strong academic background and proven ability to apply your intellect to complex problems. But that's just the start. Eversheds Sutherland trainees need to be multi-faceted people who combine extreme professionalism with genuine approachability and real personality.

While many trainees have studied law, we welcome applications from all degree disciplines. The reason is simple. The trainees from a non-law background bring a wealth of alternative experience that can only benefit a growing and diverse organisation like ours. You may have a background in business, a degree in an exacting science, a knowledge of foreign languages or even a record of holding positions of responsibility.

However, whatever your background - and our trainees are an incredibly diverse community of people - you will need to demonstrate a number of other skills and aptitudes to succeed as part of our team:

  • Strong academic performance
Have you achieved or are you on track to achieving 128 UCAS points (new UCAS tariff points) (ABB) at A-Level (or equivalent), a 2.1 degree (or equivalent) in any degree discipline and a Pass (or above) at law school ( GDL and /or LPC/SQE) ?
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills
Do you have the mental agility and intellectual rigour to analyse problems and develop novel, unexpected solutions?
  • Proactive mindset
Are you naturally inquisitive with an openness to new ideas and the initiative to turn them into practical results?
  • Commitment to excellence
Do you hold yourself to the highest standards of performance even when the going is tough? And are you passionate about continuously raising and refining your own performance levels?
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Can you communicate fluently, clearly and concisely? Persuade and negotiate with others in both group and individual situations? Make complex information understandable to clients?
  • Working with others
Do you have the confidence to collaborate, seek feedback, share ideas and build credibility through your interaction with other people?
  • Organised with an eye for detail
Can you manage your own workload, stay organised under pressure, pay attention to detail and be relied on to complete each task accurately and completely?
  • Commerciality
Do you have the ability to see situations from a business or commercial perspective? Are you comfortable dealing with financial information and being accountable for achieving productivity goals?
  • Motivation
Are you passionate about a career as a Lawyer and a career at Eversheds Sutherland?

Sounds like someone you know? Then you're likely to fit in perfectly as part of our high-performing, inclusive and meritocratic culture.
