An opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join the Asset Intelligence team at Galliford Try.

Ideally, you will be based within the Warrington region and will have the opportunity to travel across multiple sites across the country.

What you will be doing

You will report directly into the Managing Quantity Surveyor, whilst working closely with the operational leads within the business. We are looking for somebody who is highly proactive, dynamic and can drive the commercial and financial performance of the business unit forward whilst ensuring that robust risk management principles are instilled.

Key responsibilities

Applications

  • Client - To complete all client Applications by each assessment date with the assistance of the Project Managers/Engineers, including drafting of spend profiles/forecasted Defined Cost for the Whole of the Works for the review and issue of these documents by the SQS.
  • Subcontract - To complete all SC Applications with the assistance of the Project Managers/Engineers and to make sure that all Applications are signed off with the relevant commercial documents (substantiation, pay less/payment notice, invoices) where applicable.

VCA’s (Value Cost Analysis) / CVR’s

  • Completion of all relevant VCA related actions (Updating orders, Inputting Costs, Actual Vs Accruals, Timesheet Reports, VCA period comments, VCA Comparison sheets) as required by the MQS prior to the VCA Reviews.
  • Attend and chair VCA reviews with the Project Manager in order to ensure that risk is accounted for appropriately and that a conservative commercial position is put forward.
  • Assist the MQS in the completion of all monthly CVR related tasks (CVR’s, Forecasts, WIP Comments, Commercial Report, Dashboards).
  • To be accountable to the MQS for the completion and accuracy of the VCA/CVR’s.

Change control

  • To draft and submit all commercial notifications (EW, Variation, PMI, Cost Recovery etc.) with the assistance of the MQS/Projects Team (PM, PE, SM, DM and CM).
  • To draft and submit the Variation Quotation with the assistance of the MQS/Projects Team (PM, PE, SM, DM and CM).
  • To escalate Variation Quotations to the MQS/PM if resolution can’t be agreed with the Employer’s/Subcontractor’s QS.
  • To be accountable to the MQS/PM in ensuring that all Variations are implemented in a timely fashion and that all clarifications/assumptions/additional employer’s risks offered at quotation stage are expressed & incorporated with Variation agreement.
  • To be accountable to the MQS for ensuring that the Variation flows from Employer to SC where applicable and that all SC Variations are notified to the SC while ensuring all risks are captured and stepped down where applicable.
  • To be accountable to the MQS for all Variation registers and folders being up to date with the relevant implementations where applicable.

Procurement

  • To assist the project teams in completing all aspects of procurement.
  • To understand Client and SC’s T&C's in their entirety.
  • To be accountable to the MQS/PM for the completion of the data parts and relevant Subcontract documentation to ensure that all project risks are included within the agreed Subcontract and the Subcontract is risk averse.
  • To ensure that any Subcontract agreement has terms and conditions that are appropriate for GT, with commercial risks identified through GT procurement system.
  • To be accountable to the MQS/PM for subcontract commercial administration (letting, negotiation, payments, variations and financial accounting).

Other commercial administration

  • To be accountable to the MQS for all cost transfers.
  • To be accountable to the MQS for the completion of all registers (SC Payment, Procurement).
  • To be accountable to the MQS for the completion of all progress reports.
  • To be accountable to the MQS for the completion of all utilisation charts from a commercial perspective (formulas, tables, formatting, duplication etc.).
  • To assist in all commercial mobilisation post contract awards (reverse CTC, resource schedule, draft spend profile, draft application, EW/VO Registers and procurement schedule).
  • To assist in all aspects of Pre-Contract negotiations.
  • To ensure all commercial documents are saved on the server for future records.

About you

Demonstrable experience working within a commercial capacity within the construction industry and an appreciation of the following:

  • Standard forms of contract
  • Change control
  • Risk management
  • Application / payment process
  • Commercial reporting
  • IT Literate and working experience of Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in quantity surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Continued professional development through relevant training and certifications.
  • Knowledge of applicable local regulations, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with relevant construction contracts, such as NEC, JCT, or FIDIC.
  • Professional qualification or membership with a recognized industry body (e.g., MRICS, MCIOB) is desirable but not required.
