This role is perfect for anyone looking to grow their career as a Reliability, Maintainability and Testability (RM&T) Engineer, known internally as a Through Life Engineer, within an exciting industry. As a Through Life Engineer, which operates as an integral part of our Safety and TLE team, you will be responsible for performing Through Life Engineering tasks for safety critical systems in both civil and military aviation platforms as well as the renewables and industrial sector.

Experience of providing RM&T support in the engineering domain, such as performing reliability prediction and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses are advantageous, but not essential as on the job training will be provided. What is important is that you thrive on solving technical problems in collaboration with other engineering functions, have a systematic analytical mindset and are able to see engineering problems from multiple perspectives.

You will be joining an inclusive and diverse team of Safety and TLE engineers with a mix of experience, who care about ensuring the products we design at GE Aerospace remain Safe, Reliable and Maintainable throughout their lifecycle. We are committed to improving our project execution through taking a lean and innovative approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement and we are passionate about professional growth and developing our team culture, capability & capacity to meet our internal and external customer needs. As we are a combined team of System Safety and TLE Engineers, there will be an opportunity to learn and develop across both closely related engineering disciplines.

If this sounds like an environment in which you would thrive, then this could be the next role for you.

Job Description

As a Through Life Engineer, you would be responsible for providing RM&T support to programmes across the whole product lifecycle. This involves working closely with the product development to:

  • Estimate how reliable a system will be in its intended use environment and document the results in the reliability assessment report.
  • Predict the ways in which a system will fail and analyse the effects of those failures on system operation and document the results of that analysis in the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis report.
  • Assess the effectiveness of built in test functionality to understand the likelihood a failure being detected by the system and isolated to the system.
  • Determine if the maintainability of a system supports aircraft maintenance requirements.
  • Create reliability test plans and procedures and document the results of testing performed.

The team is regularly involved in Bids and Proposals from concept generation and is building increasingly strong links with the product support, field support and in service reliability teams which gives a rare opportunity to provide support to programmes from cradle to grave. You will be joining a dynamic team, supporting projects across power distribution and controller systems which enables every engineer in the team to gain broad experience of aircraft system platforms allowing the team to reach their potential.

By joining GE Aerospace, as part of an exciting and dedicated team, you will have the opportunity to move projects and roles to provide variety and grow your responsibility as your experience increases.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • An appropriate degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Electronics, Applied Physics or similar subject, or equivalent experience.
  • A logical mindset, alongside good problem solving and solution building skills.
  • You will be required to work in a team environment alongside peers in other engineering disciplines, so verbal communication and collaboration skills are essential to make you (& the team) most effective.
  • Being able to perform detailed and logical analyses, and documenting the results in a clear and concise way is key, so written communication and attention to detail is important.
  • Of course, it’s not just about the technical! You consider yourself to have strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the experience and confidence in presenting to peers and more senior stakeholders within the business.

In short you would feel comfortable in meeting the following which are considered important behaviour anchors within GE;

  • Humble: respectful, receptive, agile, eager to learn
  • Transparent: promptly shares critical information, speaks with candor, and contributes constructively
  • Focused: quick learner, strategically prioritizes work, committed
  • Leadership ability: strong communicator, collaborative
  • Problem solver: analytical-minded, challenges existing processes, critical thinker

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience of the systems design lifecycle will help you in activities such as capturing, understanding and documenting the customer’s system through life requirements. Good appreciation of the principles of Design for Reliability will aid in the generation of TLE assessments such as Reliability Predictions, FMEAs and maintainability analyses. Strong understanding of what makes a reliable and usable product is essential and strong communication and influencing skills are advantageous in this role.
  • Previous experience in an aviation, automotive or similar embedded systems development environment is helpful as it demonstrates understanding of working to rigorous industry mandated development standards; for example, ARP4754A and ARP4761. This shows a knowledge of working with complex system designs, for implementation in hardware and software.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of how the Reliability and Safety engineering activities interact.
