The Specialty & Primary Care (SPC) Therapy Area (TA) is responsible for developing and implementing global medical and commercialisation strategies for our broad portfolio of diseases and medicines, including respiratory, immuno-inflammation, nephrology and infectious diseases.
The SPC External Engagement Team (EET) in SPC works across the portfolio of diseases and medicines partnering & developing medical affairs strategies and programmes that engage with key external stakeholders, including, healthcare professionals (HCPs), patients and professional societies across multiple channels. These medical affairs activities and programmes include a wide range of channels including digital, congress and social media.
We partner with a broad group of internal and external stakeholders for the delivery of these programmes in our goal to deliver innovative, differentiated and best in class medical engagement to meet the needs of HCPs and patients.
This is a critical & exciting time for the global medical affairs organisation with a mandate to deliver top quartile performance in our external engagement approaches. The EET is central to this ambition for the S&PC TA and therefore this role will be part of our response to ensuring success over 2022-2023.
What will you do?
Projects that the IP will work on will include:
- Delivery of programmes at key global congresses including virtual and physical exhibition booths and scientific symposia
- Delivery of external engagement medical education programmes including webinars, digital events and projects
- Delivery of professional relations programmes and activities, including steering group meeting, advisory boards, etc. for HCPs and patients
- Leading and co-creating with global, multi-functional, matrix teams to deliver programmes and resources
On a day to day level, this will involve:
- Liaison with the Conference Secretariat, external vendors, medical brand teams to develop the congress plan and manage the implementation (conferences can occur in any global location).
- Participating in and assisting in running cross-functional strategic planning sessions
- Multi-functional stakeholder management – engaging across the business on high profile projects
- Stakeholder workstream management – attending workstream meetings and reporting back to the broader project lead team to ensure overall alignment to objectives
- Investment and spend tracking – exposure to large scale budgeting and reporting
- Agency (external vendor) liaison
- Close working with the regional and LOC stakeholders to co-create global strategies and tactical implementation
- KPI and metrics management per project
You’ll be excited by the thought of:
- Gaining Exposure across the business to commercial and medical / regional and local / regulatory
- Working and partnering with key external stakeholders including global expert HCPs, patient societies and medical societies and understanding of their role in the pharma development processes
- Gaining an in depth understanding of the complex global pharmaceutical medical affairs environment and how this is essential for effective medicines development and commercialisation
- Understanding of the internal and external regulatory requirements for pharma companies
What you will need
Key skills required include scientific knowledge, experience of successfully utilising digital platforms and social media, confident and competent communication (oral and written), outgoing, flexible and resilient with a sense of humour.
The Assessment Centres for successful applicants are expected to take place in February and March 2022 and the placement will last, approximately, one year.
You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree, but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You may be expected to provide evidence from your university to show you will be an undergraduate student for the duration of the placement year and they are supportive of your placement.
You must be undertaking a Biosciences, Medical or Pharmacy degree.
- A salary of £21,000 - £22,500 plus a bonus

For Industrial Placements that involve lab-based work, working with human biological samples the student must be Hepatitis B vaccinated to work within these labs. Hepatitis B vaccination is entirely voluntary. If you decide not to be vaccinated, your decision will be fully respected. You will be given appropriate project work, but would not be able to work with human biological samples. It’s critical we follow the appropriate health and safety guidelines to all employees safe.
