The role
Working as part of the Infrastructure Team, the Senior SQL Database Administrator will play a key senior role in the support and development of critical core infrastructure systems and EPR applications. Along with supporting the Deputy Head of Technical Services & Senior Infrastructure Analyst you will be involved significantly with all other IT teams to facilitate the delivery of projects, supporting changes and updates.
The Post-holder will be technically responsible for all areas of the SQL Server environment including ongoing improvement of the existing databases, identifying processing bottlenecks and implementing performance tuning where appropriate.
The role will be required to assist in the design and development of replacement databases utilizing industry standard technologies and methodologies. This will include failover strategies, disaster recovery management, source control and deployment, continuous Integration of databases.
The post-holder will also be responsible for investigating user access to databases and remediating where such access is inappropriate or there are security concerns.
The role will also require the migration of SQL databases, DTS and SSIS packages, reporting services and analysis services to later versions.
The location
Based in the South of Birmingham the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is situated in idyllic circumstances surrounded by Woodland with great links to public transport and into Birmingham City Centre.
The role will be based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and will be situated in the main Trust HQ building and based within the Digital Transformation team.
The department currently operates a hybrid model of working consisting of a combination of on site and remote work which can be tailored to suit applicant.
The candidate
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a degree either in IT, Digital Technology or something very similar. You must have an interest in SQL Database work within a Infrastructure remit and want to improve patient care by ensuring our clinical systems are fit for purpose and supporting our patients.

You must have excellent attention to detail as you will be working with highly complex SQL based server systems. The role suits a dynamic and reliable individual who is capable of working independently or as part of a team. The candidate must possess good written and verbal communication skills as well as be able to meet deadlines.
Previous experience in a similar role within IT/Digital or the wider public sector environment would be an advantage but not essential.
Skills and experience
- Experience working on database technology within business intelligence & analytics and working with structured query language including transact SQL.
- Experience working as a database developer to ensure reporting data sources are optimally tuned for reporting.
- Experience in administering a reporting database.
- Experience with analysing complex requirements.
- Experience in working with both Agile/RAD methodologies and SSADM or equivalent waterfall methodologies.
- Experience in creating / maintaining as-built documentation owned jointly across a team.
- Experience of making decisions when needed and knowing when to ask advice and guidance to gain approval before embarking on specific actions.
- Experience of managing numerous work streams/ projects simultaneously and delivering to tight deadlines.
- Knowledge of NHS acute sector reporting and data sets, data definitions and standards and information requirements across the NHS.
- Extensive knowledge of databases and their manipulation.
- Excellent MS SQL Server skills are essential to include Analysis Services and Reporting Services.
- Strong influencing skills and ability to negotiate with senior stakeholders both internal and external on complex issues.
- Flexible and comfortable with uncertain or ambiguous situations, showing initiative to develop practical and workable solutions within a complex environment.
- Use own initiative to interpret national guidance and input to strategic planning and align with Trust objectives.
- Ability to think strategically and develop strategies and plans to develop information services in a constantly changing environment.

The NHS Graduates into Health Digital, Data, Technology Scheme (DDaT) is a highly focused development pathway for graduates to become the next NHS digital, data and technology middle managers and beyond. Alongside their new role, graduates will complete an apprenticeship relevant to the role they are undertaking and integral Continual Professional Development (CPD) training.
