The role

Illumina has an exciting opportunity to join us as a Trainee Solicitor in our exceptional, full service, in-house Legal team. We are looking to offer to the right candidate, who has professional proficiency in German and English, the possibility of a training contract.

If you are keen to secure a role that will have a defined career path and are looking to qualify as a Solicitor through the traditional Training Contract route or through the new Solicitor Qualifying Examination (SQE) path, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Why us

Our multilingual and multijurisdictional Legal team is a vital part of Illumina, providing advice and guidance to a variety of departments and supporting the organisation through all legal matters. You will be therefore exposed to matters ranging from Commercial, Public Procurement, Regulatory, IP, Compliance, Employment, Competition, Litigation and Privacy. We will offer the possibility to complete a 3-month contentious secondment in a reputable law firm, as part of your training.

Your responsibilities

  • Providing legal assistance on commercial and corporate matters in the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Emerging Markets
  • Assembling, proofing and editing contracts, templates, communications, corporate documents and policies
  • Conducting legal research and drafting memos as instructed by senior attorneys
  • Assisting on outbound and inbound commercial transactions, tenders and contracts
  • Preparing and filing legal documents with appropriate authorities
  • Reviewing and ensuring the company's compliance with rules and regulations
  • Applying the law, company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues
  • Working on assignments of moderate scope where problem solving requires application of learned techniques
  • Building excellent working relationships internally and externally.
  • Exercising judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.

Requirements for Traditional/Training Contract Pathway

  • A-Levels (or equivalent e.g. international baccalaureate or high school diploma)
  • Qualifying law degree (LLB) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
  • Legal Practice Course (LPC) - you can apply even if you haven’t completed the LPC.

Requirements for Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) Pathway

  • A-Levels (or equivalent e.g. international baccalaureate or high school diploma)
  • Degree (or equivalent)
  • SQE Part 1 (some level of legal training is required and so if you haven’t completed an LLB or the GDL, ideally you would have passed the SQE Part 1).

General requirements

  • Professionally proficient in German and English
  • Solid academic credentials from a reputable institution in the UK, Europe or a common law jurisdiction
  • Some legal experience preferred (e.g. one or more year (s) as a paralegal or contracts specialist in a law firm, in-house legal team or similar).
