Imagine our world in five years. In twenty. When you retire. How will the climate be? What energy will we use? What technologies will we rely on?

It takes years for a major energy project to progress from the initial idea to the start of construction and then decades of operation thereafter. A project that you work on today may very well retire after you do

At io consulting, we can influence these future outcomes – one project at a time – and we are driven by a passion and a desire to solve the complex technical challenges of the energy transition. To identify the best projects. To select the best technologies. To reduce emissions. To protect value. It’s why we exist and we’re proud of the work we do and excited by our future.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for an individual to join our team for a 1-year industrial placement as part of their engineering studies. You will support with working on multi-million-to-billion-dollar energy projects in the earliest stages of planning. You will learn how to tackle the big engineering, design and investment decisions that have a cascading impact through a project’s lifecycle.

You will be working with a team of experts to steer projects in the right direction. It’ll be challenging, it’ll be rewarding, and you can transform some major projects along the way.

We are looking for a current Chemical Engineering student who is eligible to work in the UK and who intends to work towards Chartered Engineer status in the future. We want an individual who is eager to learn and contribute, and who is willing to ride the peaks and the troughs of a busy and engaging year in industry.

What you will be doing

We are a small tight-knit team and you’ll be working with everyone in the company, from the management team to the disciplined engineers, SMEs and project architects. You’ll learn from our specialists in process and project development engineering, advanced simulation, flow assurance, technical safety, environmental and social, economic, and commercial analysis and business development. You will be helping to win work, facilitate workshops, run process simulations, and participate in all aspects of the process design workflow, inform cost estimation, support study managers with project controls and a whole lot more.

What type of company you’ll join

io consulting (io) is a limited liability partnership between Baker Hughes and McDermott and we operate with independent governance from our parents. We have our own Business Management Systems and are ISO 9001:2015 certified under this. Our people and culture are our own and we bring together a highly motivated and experienced workforce who are collaborative, innovative, agile and delivery focused with the client's needs at the very centre. Our relationship with our parents allows us to leverage their strengths within solutions that are driven entirely by ourselves. This brings certainty to design solutions and allows matters relating to constructability, install-ability and product supply to be integral in our design, ensuring not only an optimised one but also a 'do-able' one.

So, if you’re concerned that you’ll be ‘just another cog in the wheel’ of a big brand name but you also don’t want the uncertainty that comes with a smaller company then you’ll be in good company here.

We see ourselves as sitting in the ‘goldilocks zone’ between the large strategic consultancy firms who can be engineering ‘light’ and the engineering design houses who can get lost in the technical detail. At io you can put that MEng Chemical Engineering degree into actual practice whilst also see what the future looks like as a multi-disciplined consultant.

Where you’ll be located

The role will be based in London with hybrid working.
