We have an exciting opening for a Graduate Space Systems Software Engineer to join our growing team based at Harwell. Reporting to the Chief Engineer you'll be responsible for specifying, developing, integrating and verifying software as part of complex systems.

You will be an engineer able to bridge the gap between software and systems engineering by not only delivering required software but also contributing to the design and development of system architectures, including complex systems and systems design activities.

This is the perfect opportunity for you if you have a systems engineering background with an exposure to software, or a software engineer who has interacted with systems engineers to deliver complex systems.

If you're an enthusiastic, self-starting individual who is happy to take responsibility for a range of activities from design and development to testing of software, able to work as part of a team, flexing your priorities to support others where necessary and be comfortable in a fast-paced environment we'd love to talk to you!

Required skills, qualifications and experience

  • University degree in Computer Sciences, Software Engineering or equivalent.
  • Writing code in at least one commonly used programming language (e.g., C, Java or Python) to meet existing requirements.
  • Experience of standard software development methodologies (Agile, Waterfall), adhering to software standards and working within a quality management system.
  • Low-level software unit and functional testing to verify software specifications.
  • High-level system testing to validate system functionality.
  • Usage of requirements and testing trace matrices to understand gaps in system specifications.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, presentation preparations skills and ability to present in front of an audience.
  • Working with systems requirements to improve the quality of requirements, and to derive software requirements or technical specifications.
  • UK Citizenship; Current SC clearance or ability to achieve.
  • Flexibility to travel as required (UK and abroad).

Desired skills, qualifications and experience

  • Use of software configuration management tools and defect tracking tools e.g., Git.
  • Knowledge of space system engineering and design methodologies.
  • An understanding of space industry standards e.g. ECSS / CCSDS.
  • Knowledge and use of requirements tools such as DOORS.
