Our team in Leeds provide critical inputs to a wide range of projects relating to the water cycle including:

  • the impacts on the water environment from a wide range of activities
  • how we manage our river catchments more holistically
  • management of water resources, including surface water and groundwater
  • flood risk management, including hydraulic modelling and hydrological analysis to aid the development of flood alleviation schemes
  • nature based solutions and how they can be implemented as alternatives to the traditional ‘grey’ infrastructure solutions

We are looking for a summer intern with a passion for some or all of the above to join us and expand their skills in the water resources and flooding sector.

We are open to this being a summer placement during the summer holidays or 1 day a week for students who are studying for their MSc.

What you'll do

You will support members of the team with a range of tasks including:

  • data handling and analysis across a range of disciplines
  • production of maps and figures for reporting purposes
  • developing simple methodologies to undertake tasks
  • basic hydrological and hydraulic analysis
  • report writing
  • GIS manipulation of data (a mixture of QGIS, ArcMap and ArcPro)

You’ll be working with graduates, experienced professionals, and other students so an internship with us is the perfect opportunity to learn from a variety of people while understanding our values and culture. It’s also a great chance to get involved with real projects while gaining relevant experience.

We do not have a formal structure for our internships so you can really make the role your own. The more you get involved and the more questions you ask, the more you will gain from your experience with us.

Candidate specification

To join us for this placement you must currently be at university studying for a degree or MSc in physical geography, geology, environmental science, catchment science, mathematical modelling, hydrology, water resources & flood risk.

We are looking for students with the following characteristics:

  • A methodical approach to problem solving
  • The ability to use your initiative to undertake tasks efficiently and independently.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to confidently liaise with clients and team members.
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail with the ability to demonstrate accurate technical drawings and good report writing.
