A member of the Rail Planning and Advisory team based in any of our main offices throughout the UK (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol, or London) the Economist / Planner will be integrated within a range of transport planning projects and assisting in driving these projects forward.

Rail Planning & Advisory is part of our growing Surface Transport team, and the team’s leadership is looking to develop Mott MacDonald’s rail, metro, and light rail offer across the country, including support for national and international projects.

A key addition to the continued development of Mott MacDonald’s market presence and the company’s development, the role requires some business and commercial experience, allied to strong technical skills.

You will be expected to support the team’s leadership in growing the business across the UK, assist in the development of the team’s client portfolio working with a range of rail industry and public sector clients, and contribute to the development of new rail markets, focused on planning and economics for emerging rail infrastructure and services.

You will also have opportunities to contribute to the company’s wider portfolio of UK rail and international projects.

Candidate specification

Required for the position of Rail Planner Economist

  • Degree in a related discipline (or equivalent)
  • MSc or further qualifications related to transport planning and/or economics are of benefit but not essential
  • Successful candidate would be expected to be a member of a relevant professional organisation (such as IHT, ILT, TPS or ICE)
  • Technically proficient professional with expertise in specialist field of activity around rail economics, planning, and demand modelling/forecasting
  • Experienced in a commercial environment, business focused, and will be seeking to enhance career in a varied, dynamic, and challenging role in helping the team leaders grow the business
  • Demonstrable skills in rail economics, rail planning, demand modelling/forecasting, rail operations, transport business cases, wider transport economics, transport policy & strategy
  • Experience of industry standard processes such as PDFH, GRIP/PACE, TAG
  • Professional, strong communication skills with both clients and colleagues, and good report writing abilities.
