As a Graduate/Junior Mechanical Design Engineer for Rig Technologies, this is an opportunity to develop your professional experience in a range of aftermarket projects. You will be member of a team within a global engineering group that is responsible for delivering a range of engineering solutions for Drilling and Pressure Control Equipment.

Under the guidance of the Lead Engineer and other Design Engineers, your duties will include contributing to producing effective technical solutions for mechanical systems as directed.

You will undertake Engineering design activities including: selecting hardware, checking drawings, also preparing and checking design calculations. In this role you will apply sound engineering principles to develop creative and robust solutions to a variety of challenges. You will work closely with drafting personnel and other project personnel.

To be successful in this role you should be able to make sound engineering decisions based on your knowledge and experience, apply attention to detail and have a good awareness of modern manufacturing technologies and other practises.

You will develop your appreciation of the commercial implications of engineering decision making, develop skills in a team working environment and understand the importance of achieving targets. You should be keen to take on challenges, develop your technical and interpersonal skills as well as expand your knowledge and experience through a variety of exciting projects.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Apply technical knowledge to innovate, design and develop bespoke solutions.
  • Design solutions in accordance with applicable legislative and drilling equipment standards.
  • Assist with preparation of cost estimates and ensure all designs assigned are completed within budget.
  • Ensure designs produced are efficient and cost effective, seeking to reuse existing designs and components wherever practical.
  • Produce and review engineering documents in accordance with engineering group policy, including drawings, manuals, reports and calculations.
  • Present designs, ideas and concepts to others within the engineering team and participate in internal design review meetings.
  • Ensure all assigned deliverables are technically in accordance with client requirements and established contract requirements.
  • Develop and take part in test programs and factory acceptance tests to validate designs.
  • Contribute to the investigation, resolution and documentation of technical queries.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping in relation to projects and time recording according to required schedule.
  • Ensure a high standard of professionalism is maintained.
  • Be fully familiar and conversant with department and company policies, procedures and processes, ensuring all work and actions undertaken are always in full compliance
  • Support other departments and business units both locally and globally and carry out other duties as and when business requirements dictate as may be reasonably expected by line manager.
  • Travel where required, including offshore rig visits.

About you

Qualifications

  • A degree in mechanical engineering discipline, or equivalent (essential)

Experience

  • Knowledge of design of mechanical systems (essential)
  • Knowledge of preparing mechanical calculations (essential)
  • Knowledge of selecting components (essential)
  • Two or more years experience in a related field (essential)
  • Knowledge of pressure control equipment and/or oil field equipment (desirable)
  • Knowledge of industry standards, e.g. API, DNV, ABS, NORSOK (desirable)
  • Knowledge of CE marking and harmonized directives (desirable)

Skills, training or special knowledge

  • Understanding of mechanical assemblies, schematics & technical documentation (essential)
  • Ability to use 2D and/or 3D drawing packages (essential)
  • Ability to use MathCAD and carry out hand calculations (essential)
  • Understanding of engineering documents and drawings (e.g. ability to read ISO drawings, P&IDs etc. and to extract useful information for design) (essential)
  • Computer literacy (including good command of Microsoft packages) (essential)
  • Experience in using Finite Element Analysis software (desirable)
