    The role

You can’t see or feel radio spectrum. But any device that communicates wirelessly needs spectrum – these include televisions, car key fobs, baby monitors, wireless microphones, and satellites.

Ofcom make wireless services possible by managing the UK radio spectrum – the ‘airwaves’ essential to all wireless communications services.

On this newly created, Spectrum Policy graduate programme, you will embark on a two-year series of specialist job placements, moving regularly between projects and departments to ensure that the knowledge and insight you are exposed to is as broad as possible.

You will work on advancing a wide range of technologies, such as digital television, mobile phones, Wi-Fi, satellite communication and wireless microphones for programme-making and special events like the Commonwealth Games, football matches and Formula 1 races.

    What’s in it for you?

The Spectrum Policy pathway is wide and varied, reflecting Ofcom’s work. Graduates will have the unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in all areas of Spectrum on this rotational programme.

On completion of the programme you will have gained the following:

    • Good understanding of policy development in a technology driven sector.
    • Exposure to a wide range of stakeholders, leading to an understanding of a complex market with competing demand.
    • High level technical expertise of wireless communication.
    • Good understanding of Ofcom duties and powers with regards to spectrum management.
    • Rounded knowledge of the wireless communication markets driving demand for spectrum.
    • Awareness of our tools and policies driving optimal use of a scarce resource.
    • Experience of decision making and implementation in a regulatory environment

Graduates at Ofcom get the chance to contribute to many meaningful projects and gain experience working in the fast-paced and evolving communications sector. As such, there is no ‘right’ degree to have studied. Strong academics coupled with a willingness to learn, and enthusiasm are a must.

Ofcom is a forward-thinking, inclusive, diversity champion, and disability confident employer.
