Oxford Nanopore Technologies is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park outside Oxford, UK, with satellite offices and commercial presence in many global locations across the US, APAC and Europe.

Oxford Nanopore employs from multiple subject areas including Nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing and commercialisation. The management team, led by CEO Dr Gordon Sanghera, has a track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the market.

Oxford Nanopore’s sequencing platform is the only technology that offers real-time analysis (for rapid insights), in fully scalable formats from pocket to population scale, that can analyse native DNA or RNA and sequence any length of fragment to achieve short to ultra-long read lengths.

Our goal is to enable the analysis of any living thing, by anyone, anywhere. We offer real-time Nanopore-based DNA/RNA sequencing technology: accessible, easy to use and fully scalable for any requirement.

We are seeking forward-thinking, creative and highly motivated undergrad/postgraduate students for internships/year in industry placements in the Chemistry group, in the Platform group, and the Biologics group!

Chemistry placements

The Chemistry team comprises synthetic and analytical chemists and the placement offers experience in design, synthesis & purification of target compounds, peptides & polymers aimed at developing the next generation sequencing platforms.

We will provide training in a range of analytical techniques including 1D & 2D NMR, Mass spectrometry, FTIR & HPLC.

The Chemistry Team offers support across the R&D division which will enable interns to collaborate and make a meaningful contribution to a variety of teams with diverse applications including polymer, nanopore, peptide and chip chemistry research.

Key responsibilities

  • Learning the principles of working under good lab practice and the importance of COSHH
  • Contribute to design & synthesis of target compounds requested across the R&D divisions
  • Purification, method development and isolation of reaction products using both manual and automated processes
  • Learning how to search chemical literature to aid in synthetic route design and optimization
  • Learning the importance of communication, organisation and reporting of scientific data

Platform placements

Based in the Chip Research and Development group, you will work a multi-disciplinary team working on the current / next generation of sequencing flowcells.

All roles are hands on, laboratory based and will enrich your skills and experience in one or more core aspects of the chip technology including MEMs / microfabrication, chemistry of surfaces and interfaces, microfluidics, electronics, electrochemistry, and data analytics, with full training provided.

The positions suit candidates studying Chemistry/ Physics/ Engineering/ Material Science who are pursuing a career in the physical sciences, and are on course for at least a 2.1 at a leading university.

Biologics placements

As part of a group that researches advances in the protein reader and protein pore within the flow cell the role can be lab-based or in data analysis, will be fast paced and will include anything from protein purification, buffer compositions and sample manipulation to potentially decoding the newest signal generated by the sequencing chemistry.

The positions suit candidates studying Chemistry and Biochemistry who have an interest in pursuing a career in the biologica or data sciences, and are on course for at least a 2.1 at a leading university.

If you are interested in gaining work experience in a highly skilled team of friendly scientists while contributing to the development of platforms for DNA/RNA sequencing development, we would love to hear from you!
